Not only does she believe in freedom of movement in individual styles; she insists that each costume fit into what she calls a “fluid” wardrobe—usable in any climate, any season, and for any occasion.

MISS:MAXWELL was born in New York of Viennese parent ts. An early hint of her interest in clothes’ came when her mother and father
took her abroad. Bhe was just 10 and her brightest mepfiory of the trip was the unifor she saw. “Vienna had the st beautifully dressed sol diers in the world,” bers. «But when she came back to New York, another enthusiasm claimed her interest. She saw a single performance by the dancer, Pavlova, and became a balletomane. Vera learned to dance and later was accepted by Pavlova for her own classes. At 16 she became a member of the Metropolitan Opera Co. ballet. ' . #8 & HER CAREER as a dancer ended two years later when she married and turned to domestic Arts. A few years later, and with fsyoung son, she was faced with the problem of earning a living.

Soon she was directing the fittings. n » ” ”n «MISS MAXWELL supplemented her interest in the suits she modeled by taking a night-school course in the techniques of wholesale cutting and grading. In no time at all she was a full-fledged designer. Meanwhile she had spent a nol {day with her sister in England and there is where she first learned the beauty of British tweeds and the easy fit of British tailoring. Both were incorporated in her own designs, and today known especially for her original handling of tweeds. J SHE LIKES to combine two fabrics. It may be a striped tweed with a solid color. Banish Flies . To Protect Health
THE COMMON house fly is a real menace to health. The list of diseases flies spread include food poisoning, dysentery and typhoid fever and recent studies suggest they may also spread infantile paralysis. Even if there is no sickness in your home or neighborhood, the {flies that enter your home may {bring sickness, for flies can travel |as far as eight miles in-one day. D:sentery germs can live in the fly’s intestinal tract as long as five days. In the case of food poisoning, flies once infected with this germ remain infected for life and can infect other flies as well as the food and water with which they come in contact. » o 5
CIVILIANS cannot get DDT to rid their homes and eating nlaces of flies, but there are many other ways of stopping the fly. There are other anti-fly sprays. Screens on windows and doors help to keep out many flies. Mosquito netting over the baby’s bed or carriage if he sleeps outdoors will protect him from the fly and other insects as well. Keep garbage cans tightly covered. Remember that flies breed and live in filth, so clean up all refuse and keep the premises clean. If flies are numerous on a farm, {it is usually because animal wastes are not disposed of often enough. Piles of fermenting grass and damp {newspapers may become fly-breed-ling grounds. Food and milk supplies should be kept covered to keep flies out. Owners and proprietors of markets, bakeries, restaurants and other food establishments need to wage a constant campaign to protect their wares from flies and the disease {germs they spread. The presence {of many flies in a food store has | been called a sign that the store is | not clean.

Do No Damage
Don’t worry too much about the moth who flies around the ceiling and light bulbs in a frenzy. He can do no damage. The low-flying moth, | however, should be killed on sight before she has a chance to lay her eggs in some of your best woolens. Remember that the larvae stage is the one in Which the damage is done. Larvae are not easily detected, so take no chances — tuck your furs and woolens safely away in your cedar chest.

Here is the five-step procedure: 1. Rid flueways of the fly ash— fine silvery red powder—and greasy soot or tar deposited by fuels by opening the cleanout door above the firing door, and using a metal flue brush and long-handled wire scraper.
