Franklin College The 112thr year of Franklin college will begin Friday, Sept. 7 President William Gear Spencer said today. College officials said advance reg{stration of freshman women is far above last vear. They predicted a sharp rise in male registration by the January semester. Registration will begin—Monday morning, Sept 10, and class instruction will begin Sept. 11. For the first time, Franklin college is offering a major course in speech with instruction in radio and dramatics, The new department has been separated from the English department and placed under the supervision of Prof. J. Danfel Kocher. New appointments to the faculty include Miss Vera Howell, Muncie, who will head the home economics division, and Dr. Louis B. Matthews, Jackson, Tenn, who will replace Dr. Pleasant Lee Powell, retiring head { the department of religion.

FEDERAL WORKERS TO 40-HOUR WEEK

WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 (U. P) —Emplovees of the federal government are going back to a 40-hour Work week. President Truman ordered all departments and agencies to make the switchback by Sept. 9 and to limit the 40 hours of work to a five-day schedule “wherever possibls,” The government is expected to save about $2,000,000000 a year in overtime payments as a result of the order. Federal agencies operated throughout most of the war on a 48-hour week.
