Cases Less Serious.
ROCKFORD, Ill, Aug. 21 (U P.).—Medical authorities indicated today that an epidemic of .infantile paralysis, which has stricken 153 persons since July 1, apparently had reached its peak. Dr. John R. Paul, poliomyelitis expert from Yale university here to supervise the campaign against the disease, said that the nature of 10 cases during the last two days led him to believe that the decisive point of the outbreak was at hand. Events of the next few days, said. would determine whether the epidemic. which has resulted in 17 deaths, would increase in intensity or show a sudden improvement. Dr. Paul said that new cases admitted to county hospital yesterday all were of the spinal type, less serious than the bulbar, or respiratory type, prevalent in the earlier stages of the epidemic :

Case at Camp Grant Dr. Paul said that it would be approximately 10 days—the length of the infantile paralysis incubation period—before positive evidence could be obtained .of the effect of spraying the city with DD: T. A specially-equipped army bomber flew over Rockford Sunday, loosing 1600 gallons of the powerful insecticide over a portion of the city. The experiment was conducted with the ald of the army and the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis to test a theory that flies are carriers of the polio virus. Almost simultaneously with Dr. Paul's announcement, the first case of infantile paralysis was recorded at nearby Camp Grant. The city of Rockford has been “off-limits” since Aug. 3 for all military personnel at the camp, except those

FRANCE T0 HELP PAY YANKS BASED THERE
WASHINGTON, Aug. 21 (U. P.).— The U. S. and French governments announced last night that France will give the equivalent of $17 a month to each American soldier in France, supplementing the regular U. S. army pay. U. 8. soldiers in France receive their army pay in francs at the official rate of 50 francs to the dollar. Prices are so high that this money does not go very far. Proposals had been made to increase the exchange rate so that they would get more’ francs for their army pay. The decision announced today, however, means that the rate of 50 francs to the dollar will be maintained. But the French government will make a payment of 850 francs a month to each American soldier in addition to what he regularly receives from the U. 8. army. The soldier will get more francs without the exchange rate being changed. Treasury officials said France will do this without cost to the U. S.
