PARIS, Aug. 16.-Members of a | volunteer army of more than 60,000

Many of the volunteers had seen action with DeGaulle's forces in Africa and in the liberation of France, An agreement had been reached between Paris and Washington for their use in the Far East but. transport was lacking to take them to the Pacific theater. Other Frenchmen, however, had been fighting the Japanese for some time before the war's end, ‘both on land and at sea. French troops caught in Indo-China when the Japanese took complete control there last January have continued the battle. French Refitting Fleet And sailors of the French battleship Richelieu and cruiser Triumphant have seen months of action in the Pacific. Practically the entire French fleet, with 6000 officers and 75000 men, which had been stationed in European waters until V-E day, was being refitted and repaired for far eastern service against the Japanese. Several marine units trained for amphibious operations, also had been expected to go to the Pacific. in’ Indo-China, “maquis” fighting has had a confused history. Japanese troops, with agreement of the Vichy government, marched into ithe territory when France fell. In ‘January of this year the Japanese jdemanded “complete collaboration” and told Governor General Jean Decoux they were going to take over Indo-China by force. Contacted U. 8S. Almost half the French troops escaped into China, following a prearranged plan, They contacted the United States commander, Gen, Albert C.
