WAKEMAN G. 1S
OPEN THEATER
‘Sister Eileen’ Will Be First Production.
Strictly G. I. is the Soldiers’ Workshop theater at Wakeman Convalescent hospital at Camp Atterbury, first “legit” theater ‘of its kind in the nation. Strictly—except that a “star” will be imported occasionally. Twp topnotch comediennes will lend their
talents to the presentation of the Broadway hit, “My Sister Eileen,” opening Friday at the camp and continuing through Aug. 31. Two “ringers” who will appear opening week are Miss Effie Afton, the “Violet” of the New York production of the comedy, and Miss Peggy Van Vleet, the Eileen of the Chicago company, Otherwise the cast is 100 per cent G. 1., WAC and post civilian. Even the scenery has been designed and built by Wakeman personnel. The play is being produced and directed by Lt. William W. Merrill, owner of a legitimate theater in Detroit, and is enthusiastically “fathered” by Col. Charles Young, commanding officer of the hospital. Theater Seats 328 The theater, seating 325, was born out of an old recreation hall. The
conversion, including structural al-| |
terations, lighting, seat installation]
and scenery building was accom- |
plished by convalescent patients and post personnel. | The purpose of the project is the] rehabilitation of soldier convalescents formerly engaged in the theatrical business and, of course, the education—in all phases of play production—of those patients planning post-discharge careers in the theater. = Association with prominent actors ‘will be a chief feature. “Hi, Yank!” a musical and the Soldiers’ Workshop theater's first production, was an encouraging success, and after a run at Camp, was brought to Indianapolis for a war bond rally show at the Indiana theater.

All have been issued since 1939. : The government, through its U. S. Commercigl Co. is offering these stamps to dealers, who must place minimum orders of $200. But, if you're not interested in
‘stamps, how about some iron goods,
or Italian ceramics? Or, ‘marble and statuary? Or cofal? Or beads? Italian wine and spirits? Well, then, how about some cameos or toys? The U. S. Commercial Co,, a wartime hush-hush company which was set up to do preclusive buy-
ing, has all these things for sale,
or soon will have. (Preclusive buy-

ing, if you've forgotten, is the purchasing of strategic materials abroad at almost any price, for the sole purpose of keeping the enemy from getting such materials.) The company -has been set up as the American agent for the Allied Commission in Italy, and it will serve in the sale and ‘distribution in the U, S. of all Italian products. These products, mostly luxury goods at present, must be declared surplus and available for sale outside Italy. If some Italian exporters have clients here, they can communicate with them about purchases, but the U. S. Commercial Co. is the sole agent through which the purchase can be approved here. In Italy, all such deals have to be approved both by the Allied Commission and the Italian government, The Commercial company’s role as agent is said to be just a temporary one, to tide over the time until Italy can assume normal international trade relations again.
