‘Sister Eileen’ Will Be First Production.

Strictly G. I. is the Soldiers’ Workshop theater at Wakeman Convalescent hospital at Camp Atterbury, first “legit” theater ‘of its kind in the nation. Strictly—except that a “star” will be imported occasionally. Twp topnotch comediennes will lend their

talents to the presentation of the Broadway hit, “My Sister Eileen,” opening Friday at the camp and continuing through Aug. 31. Two “ringers” who will appear opening week are Miss Effie Afton, the “Violet” of the New York production of the comedy, and Miss Peggy Van Vleet, the Eileen of the Chicago company, Otherwise the cast is 100 per cent G. 1., WAC and post civilian. Even the scenery has been designed and built by Wakeman personnel. The play is being produced and directed by Lt. William W. Merrill, owner of a legitimate theater in Detroit, and is enthusiastically “fathered” by Col. Charles Young, commanding officer of the hospital. In Italy, all such deals have to be approved both by the Allied Commission and the Italian government, The Commercial company’s role as agent is said to be just a temporary one, to tide over the time until Italy can assume normal international trade relations again.
