They either had not had time to clean them, so tardily had the rifles arrived, or else they had not known how to clean them, so green were the men.” “But that is nothing,” he added. “French troops in - North Africa sometimes went into battle without rifles, waiting to pick up those of the, fallen.” Foisie, who. served in the 1st armored division as a machine gunner during the North African campaign, last spring told the Commonwealt. club here the previously unrevealed story of 20 American C-47 troop

Up for Hoosier Ports.
Hoosier cities today have airport plans galore, but little money with which to finance them as a result of a baffling legislative whodunnit. Somebody, somehow, somewhere stripped the bonding power clause from the new aviation bill, adopted last spring by the 1945 legislature. As a consequence, municipalities jack means of raising aviatidn funds. They can’t issue bonds to obtain them.
lopeter, former chairman of the governor's aviation committee, said it was Frank Murray of the Taxpayers Federation who suggested “a number of amendments” at a! time when the bonding power was in the bill.
Lost In Shuffle
He said he didn’t quite know what happened, but when the amendments had been made, the bonding clause had been lost in the shuffle He said the Taxpayers Federation had wanted to “modify” the power of the state gviation commission. Mr. Murray said he didn't have the slightest idea as to who might have trimmed the vitals out of the aviation bill, as it were. He said he at one time had written a bonding {clause into the bjll, not out of it. “Nobody knows who did that,” he| said. “But were all equally tof

Brewster's Millions' Has a G. I. Twist.
The Hollywood revamp of “Brewster's Millions,” which puts a G. I. twist to the 1903 novel by Hoosierland's George Barr McCutcheon, opened yesterday at the Circle,
The show, which was discussed, cussed and finally banned in Memphis Tenn, .over racial issues, stars Dennis O'Keefe, Eddie “Rochester” Anderson, Helen Walker, June Havoc, Gail Patrick and Mischa | Auer. Rewoven to fit into 1945, the film is .based on the antics of a discharged soldier, who returns to find he has to spend $1,000,000 in two months. Dennis O'Keefe is the unlucky guy {who has to get rid of a million in order to inherit another seven mile | lion.
Faces Complications
One situation follows another with O'Keefe up to his neck in the business of throwing away a million without giving any to charity or acquiring any permanent assets. Another little clause which keeps him jumping is the stipulation that he must ‘keep the reason for his spending an absolute secret. He almost loses his childhood sweetheart and bride-to-be, Helen Walker, after showering chorine {June Havoc and society gal Gail {Patrick with mink coats and jewels.

Tall, but stocky Mailman John M. Baldwin walked slowly north on Rural street, it was 8:30 a. m. and few answered his ring, _the street was nearly deserted. . It had never been ak way before and he looked a little puzzled as he came up the walk at 655, mopping the sweat from his brow. . Then bedlam broke loose, from in.side the home of Mrs, Catherine C. Kirby, from the backyard and around the house swarmed neighbors, far and near, by the dozens. . . . The crowd swamped the mailman with congratulations and gifts because it marked the 25th year on that route. . . . It was the first time since July 1, 1869. when 16 postmen began free delivery here, that one was honored spontaneously for 25 years of service. . . . Democrats have conceded virtual defeat in their bitter wholesale beer war with the Républican state administration. Twenty Democratic ex-wholesalers dismissed their own suits against. the new G. O. P. liquor code in federal court here. . Two more daily flights from Indianapolis to Chicago were added to Eastern Air. Lines’ schedule Wednesday. . . . Eastern's new total of 12 through flights brings the number of daily air flights in and out of our fair city to 34.
