FIVE-POINT AIR
PROGRAM URGED
Gen. Arnold Implores U. S."
To Keep Supremacy.
| WEW YORK, Aug. 2 (U. P).— Gen. Henry H, Arnold, chief of the army air forces, urged last night
that the United States follow a fivepoint program to assure the nation
0 {post-war air supremacy and pre-
vent the rise of any future aggressor. Aefw hours before Arnold spoke at an Air Power league-wings club dinner, the air forces newest fighter. Lockheed’s P-80 jet-propelled plane, skimmed into New York from Dayton, O., a distance of 544 air miles in 62 minutes. Arnold sald that the United States should not make the mistake it made after the last war in reducing air force personnel and curtailing experiments with new equipment. 5 Outlines Proposals He suggested this program the country must have: 1—Air forces able to handle any eventuality that arises.” 2—Trained personnel in the alr forces adequate for rapid expansion. 3—Adequate research and development, “so that our equipment will be the best in the world.”
4—A strong airplane industry,
j capable of rapid expansion, to “pro
duce enough of the best possible equipment in the shortest time.” 5—Bases— "strategic springboards from which we can operate efficient-
ly.”
DAN CUPID MAY NOT EQUAL 1944 RECORD
WASHINGTON, Aug. 2 (U, P.)— The Census Bureau today put it up to redeployed servicemen and veterans to make the 1945 marriage crop the equal of 1944's. od Marriage licenses issued in cities during June were six per cent more: numerous than for June, 1044. But Bureau Director J. C.
- Capt said it was still problematical
whether the 1945 total will equal 1944's 513,147. That, he said, “will -depend--in part upon the extent to which veterans of the European phase of World War II take advantage of redeployment furloughs to marry before reassignment to the Pacific, and the marriage plans of veterans granted discharge under the point system.” Capt said a decline in the marriage rate since 1942 was almost halted in the first half of this year when 258917 licenses were issued in cities over 100,000 as compared with 261,336 in the first half of 1944. . The decline since 1942—when servicemen were rushing to get married before going overseas—is nothing to worry about, Capt said. “On. the contrary,” he added. “the steady decline has been a drop toward a more normal situation which has by no means been reached.”
STATE HIGH SCHOOLS USE AIR EQUIPMENT
Indiana high schools have acQuired from the government about $1,250,000 worth of aircraft equipment for Instructional use, Dr. Clement T. Malan, state superintendent of public instruction, said today. The equipment, obtained during the last 10 months, includes aircraft, aircraft ‘engines, propellers, instruments, radios and synthetic air training equipment. It has been used for training thousands of preinductees i} Sodan high schools.

PILOTS IN 4 MONTHS
WASHINGTON, Aug. 2 (U. PJ). ~The navy'’s heroic air group 12 lost 21 pilots during four months action in the Pacific. But 126 enemy planes were shot down and the -. Tachikawa aircraft plant blasted before the group returned to this country. The navy said the -unit. would have suffered heavier losses except for the air-sea rescue system which saved 25 men forced down at sea. Vice Adm, Marc A. Mitscher, then commander of a fast carrier task force, sent a special letter of commendation to the group’s officers and men before they returned home, Among the pilots were two commanders, Charles L. Crommelin, Herrogate Springs, Wetumpla, Fla., and Ralph Embree of Kemerer, Wis. Other members of the group included the present commander, Lt. Cmdr, Edward J. Bawka, Alexandria, Va.; Lt. Cmdr. Fred H. Michaels, Kansas City, Mo., skipper of the fighting unit, and Lt. Reu-
