to Suspend

Many Price Ceilings Soon

WASHINGTON, July 19 (U. P..

. =The government soon. will -an-

nounce a broad change in price control nolicy which will lift or suspend price ceilings on 50 to 100 items, including jewelry and many

types - of fur coats, authoritative

sources revealed today. This action is being taken, jt was said, to “streamline the office of price administration so that it can spend more of its budget and manpower on basic reconversion pricing.” Deputy Price Chief James TI Brownlee was scheduled to hold a press conferénce on reconversion pricing late today. It was doubted, however, that he would announce the new exemption policy since it

+ has not yet reached the “directing

stage.” The specific purpose of the new policy will be to remove or suspend controls on “less important items" to free OPA’'s energies and manpower for “must” programs. . Informed sources#said OPA would exempt no item from price regulations if it believes such action “will increase the national bill for essential living needs.”

“ONE: Ceilings will be suspended —rather ‘than removed--in cases where supply meets demand and prices are not expected to go above ceilings. ‘These would include items made of basic materials like aluminum. If these prices remain near »ceilings for six months, the items then would be exempted from control.

See Increased Supply TWO: Ceilings will be “either suspended or removed” from. numerous items which are “not sigpificant” in their effect on the

cost of living but involve administrative time and money to control. Jewelry and fur coats are two items covered in the second category. Fur coats oqyer $8000 already are free from price control Under the new policy the government expects to release more coats from control by lowering that figure considerably, Officials said the exemption policy was possible because the government is looking forward to an increased supply of all goods. Suspensions rather than removals are favored in most instances,

it was said, because ‘‘we ‘can't be sure what will happen when the ceilings are removed and we must be in a position to re- -impose them without much red tdpe. if prices rise.” :

Cp Rumors: Goering and Hess Were War ‘Pals of Allies’

By JOHN B. “McDERMOTT | United Press. Staff Correspondent FRANKFORT, Germany, July 19.—~Would you believe that Hermann Goering and Rudolph Hess have been pals of the allies all along? Many Germans apparently do. They .whisper about this, and many other things. Every time more than three of the reich's citizens put their heads together the rumors begin to fly. » #8 SOME are saying, and believe, that the Americans and British collect fines of 1000 marks, or $400, from every German mother who gives birth to more than three children. They say that Goering and Hess are getting kid-glove treatment in Britain because they “betrayed the luftwaffe.” Lt. Col. R. K. Phelps of Saginaw, Mich., said, “We feel such rumors are being disseminated ‘by Nazi sympathizers, but the trouble is that the wilder the rumor the

faster it spreads.” { 2 = HERE are a few more choice | bits of gossip which are firmly de-

nied > ‘the military government: The allies are considering. a law forbidding marriage among Germans for at least five years, Two Hanau (a town situated just southeast of Frankfurt) military government officers and other

" United States army officers are in

the pay of the Russians, The mission of these officers.is to grant as small a ration as possible to the German: civilians in order to -produce discontent and ‘drive the Germans to .Commu-

nism. o os »

OTHER RUMORS: Three military government officers who per-

| mit free speech are being paid- by

“the Russians because most of the agitators’ arguments benefit Communism. German soldiers returning home from prison camps have been forced to swear they will not re= veal any mistreatment which they received at the ‘hands of their captors. Phelps said you can deny all these rumors until your tongue is weak, but the Germans still believe them.
