POLES PREFER

~ WAR TO HOME

Would: ‘Rather Fight Japs Than Take Red Orders.

By ANN STRINGER United Press Staff Correspondent , ANCONA, Italy, July 18-—-Gen. Waldislaw Andérs laughed heartily today when told that the Polish troops he commands in Italy would be glad to follow him to the Pacific

desert if he should order them to return to Poland.

“Well, they have no .need to worry,” he said. “I give the troops my solemn promise that I will never order them to return to Poland under the present conditions.” The attitude of the Polish corps was sounded out in an unofficial poil by this correspondent of scores of soldiers and women auxiliaries in various units around the corps headquarters. Wait#Anders Order Most of them said that, although they had no reason to fight Japan, they would go to the Pacific if Anders so ordered. All of them polled said they would not go back to Poland so long as it is under the present government. They regard

a Soviet influence to permit them freedom if they returned. Anders refused to comment on reports that the Polish corps would be asked to serve in the southeast Asia | command. He said he preferred not | to speak on the subject since the political situation in Poland and the status of the Polish corps are so uncertain,

The proposed amphitheater, which will - have 4350 permanent seats, will be landscaped to blend with present park vegetation, the parks superintendent continued. Latest devices will be installed, including- equipment that will permit easy addition of television later, Mr. Brown declared. “The issuance of bonds to pay for this construction will not increase the tax rate,” he promised, “bes :ause the park department's present bond refunding rate is only half of our legal ceiling. “Initial costs of these projects can be financed without increasing
