1 Victory Field fo Be 'Lit Up' Tonight at Gala Shrine Benefit Affair as Our. Tribasnch Try for 11th Victory in 12 Games
By EDDIE ASH Times Sports Editor won 10 games in their 11 starts, the fampeging Redskine have come up to the annual Vigtory field Shrine Night hitting on all cylinders and looking the part of champions, The fact that the Indians are only trailing the league leading Milwaukee Brewers by half a game adds to the Shrine attraction and the Shriners intend to present their greatest baseball program for the
fans and players tonight, = The Tribe's second tilt of the series with the Toledo Mud Hens is scheduled to get under way at 8:30 and the Shriners are to stage a huge pre-game extravaganza, And in the seventh inning—the stretch inning-—everybody in. the park will “light up.” The park lights will be blacked out and at a signal from Harry C. Geisel, master of ceremanies, the fans will be asked to strike matches.
Two kitchen matches will be
given to every fan a the gates and Encee Geisel has 25,000 kitchen sticks on hand to provide the fans with “torches.” * Charity Event The Shrine’s share of the gate receipts will ‘be donated to crippled children’s hospital. Since the game ill be a charity event, the “pass” list has been suspended and all who enter the park will have. to shell out. There will be no increase in prices. Prior to the game the Shriners

Also, at the. home plate, a piano will be set up and Harry Bason and Frankie Parrish, radio entertainers, will play and sing.’ The Harlan brothers, guitar specialists, will entertain for the fans as they enter the turnstiles. It looks liké a very large evening in the entertainment league and the Indians' hope to top it off by trouncing Toledo again. Jim Wal-

opener, the Redskins won, 10 to 5, and got their 10 markers on 12 hits. It was the Indians 11th Victory over the Mud Hens in 13 clashes so far this season. While the Indians “were winning’ that one, Milwaukee won two at St. Paul and fattened its lead, but not too mueh, and the Tribesters think they will overhaul the Cream City pastimers before the week is out, The ‘Redskins’ victory last night was highlighted by Stan Wentzel's
three-run “homer in “the fourth inning. He parked the horsehide in’ the -parkihg lot beyond the left field wall, He also garnered two singles and batted in four runs. He is now the Tribe's leader in runs batted in, Durheim Is Winner Bob Dill batted in three runs, Norm Wallen two and Bob Brady one. The Mud Hens also were in a batting mood but failed to cash in like’ the Indians. The Winning pitcher was Harry Durheim who
relived Pedro Jiminez in. the fourth stanza and: allowed~only three hits the remainder of fhe contest. It was his fifth victory of .the season. Ned Garver, 19, opened on the Toledo mound and was batted out in -the third. He was relieved by Sid . Peterson and Smalling worked the eighth after Peterson dropped out for a pin¢ch hitter,

favorites as “Willie, My Toes Are Cold” and “The Chill on the Hill.” But if Billy Southworth, the doughty little Cardinal pilot, had made a house-to-house canvass of every player in baseball, he probably couldn’t have found one that fitted in better with the spirited, harddriving and fun-loving players on his club than “Red” Barrett. The talkative “barber” from Santa Barbara, Cal., has become the Cardirfal cheer-leader, needling opponents both when he is pitching and when he is lolling in the dugout. And on top of that he has become the club’s top pitcher with nine vietories and three defeats since joining them late in May, Yet he was supposed to have been merely lagniappe in the big cash transaction for Cooper, because his record of nine wins against 16 losses with the Braves in 1944 should have led no one to believe that he would develop into a big winner,
