Victory With Soap One way every woman can do her bit for victory is to use soap without waste. High standards of cleanli-
“elbow grease” required if just enough soap is used to get the right amount of suds.
WHEN IT'S HOT OUTDOORS, your home should be a clean—-cool— Here are some tips for getting your home into
Slipcovers are a first essential for a summertime room. They serve a two-fold purpose—both to add brightness to your dark, wintery furni-
from general wear and the extra
J dust that comes in the house from
open windows. Consider both of these purposes when you choose slipcover fabrics. Look for firm, close weaves and strong fabrics. Your slipcovers
| should be color fast to sunlight and
be able to be dry cleaned—or, preferably, washed—without loss of color or shrinkage. The very best way to be sure | you are buying quality rayon fabrics in slipcovers is to look for informative labels. Many rayon slipcover fabrics, such as gabardine and butcher linen textured spun rayons, bear labels giving the results of laboratory tests for good service qualities.
Plain or Patterned
ON THE decorative side, choose |
patterns and colors that are gay and cheerful, yet tie in with the rest of your room, For example, if you already have a lot of pattern in the room—say printed draperies, a flowered rug, etc., select a plain, harmonizing color for your slipcovers. If your furnishings are plain, you might choose a harmonizing print for the chairs and a plain fabric for the sofa slipcover. Rayon fabrics offer you a yariety of weaves, textures and colors that are both éffective and serviceable. Here's a good trick for easy care of slipcovers. When the slipcover is still slightly damp, iron the pleated or. ruffled sections only. Then put thé cover on the furniture while it is still damp.
‘Spot’ Slipcovers WHILE THE old-fashioned “tidy” looks conspicuously out of place with our modern-day furniture, it's still
a good idea to protect upholstery at the head and arm rests, when slipcovers are not used. Practical, modern substitutes for tidies are “spot” slipcovers. These fit, like partial slipcovers, over the head of the chair and arm rests. They should be made in washable fabrics that closely match the chair upholstery in color and texture Another idea for a modern “tidy” is to cut large floral motifs from print fabric, and use them to protect plain-colored chairs. All you need do is hem the edges of the floral motifs. :
