IN POLISH RULE |
Dual Co Clash Over Liquidation.
Times Foreign Service
LONDON, July 9.—As advertised, |
headaches -are alreddy beginning to
develop over the job of liquidating]
the former Polish government in London, and its holdings.
A little brassily for such a new|
regime, Warsaw through its news agency, Polpress, announced that it had formed its own commission to handle the liquidation. It didn’t like the complexion of the British treasury committee assigned to the tasig because it included members of the defiinct Arciszewski administra~ tion. - Foreign office sources, somewhat
* testily sald that the two bodies
“would not necessarily be contradictory,” indicating that the com-
+ mittee ‘which Warsaw is setting up
here would not he ignored, but hardly indicating how closely they could work together, In Debt to Britain Jan Jagodzinski, local director of Polpress, whom the London Poles recently arrested as a draft dodger but quickly released, predicted that Warsaw would not be inclined to honor certain of the exile group's financial obkgations if the Warsaw committee ‘was not given, every facility here, He said, apart from British funds used to support Polish armed forces, that the London government had } incurred a debt of between 80-90,-000,000 pounds sterling in Britain which had been used to support the diplomatic ‘corps and other government -agencles, including propaganda and welfare. It is known that British lend-lease largely - to the armed forces, totaled. 120,000,000 pounds by June 30, 1944. The amount of other credits to Poland has not yet been published. Support Continues It is understood that the British will continue to support the Polish army indefinitely, or until some kind of satisfactory switch-over to Warsaw's command can be worked out. " The British are also continuing to finance the welfare program for the families of Polish soldiers, reportedly involving some 10;000,000 pounds a year. The Communist Daily Worker charges that this British money is actually. being used to create a kind of “floating state” of reactionary Poles who simultaneously are doing everything they can to cripple the new Warsaw regime, both
politically and commercially.
