proud residents, Yesterday they voted to return to the Union after 85 defiant years. It wasn't a mock ceremony. There were tears in several eyes. It was the end of an era. Dade county had used-the U, 8. mails, paid taxes and sent its representatives to the state legislature, But the flag of the Confederacy was the only emblem to fly above the courthouse within the memory of the oldest citizen. From 1860 until yesterday Dade county was the Free State of Dade. Then, with 600 of the county's 6000 citizens in the armed forces, the homefolk decided: it was time officially to revoke the resolution by which their fathers seceded from the Union.

A thunderous “aye” roared from| the square. When Townsend -asked for nayes, there was only silence. The silence continued as the Stars and Bars was lowered slowly from the mast above the courthouse. There were a few tears. Then the Stars and Strips was run up. The crowd cut loose with a lusty rebel yell, President Truman sent a tele-

gram, “The wheel has come to a full circle after 85 years,” the President said. “Welcome home, pilgrims.”
