_ Polish Soldiers

Crise at |

Russ Powers Over Homeland

By LEIGH WHITE Times Foreign Correspondent ROME, June 28—The solution of the Polish problem according to the Russian interpretation of the valta agreement appears to have ‘brought nothing but despair to the walk of the Polish 2d corps in Italy The park —- benches in Rome are filled these days with obviously unhappy Polish soldiers They sit {for hours staring at the ground. According to the best. possible estimates not more than a Mr. White fourth of the 80.000 Poles in Italy would consider returning to Poland voluntarily They simply do not believe that it

will be possible for them to lead a [free and independent existence in a Poland dominated by the Soviet Union. Those who would consider returning to Poland, I am told, are almost - entirely made up of deserters from the German army. These men have not been gaditiereq by imprisonment in thé Soviet Union. The great majority, however, are men whose experiences in Soviet concentration camps have made them permanent enemies of theSoviet system. They are -convineed that if they ever should set foot in Poland as it exists at present, they would be depgrted-to central Asia. What then is to be done with: the Poles in Italy, if they refuse to return to Poland? Many are hoping to be allowed to emigrate to Australia and New Zealand. Others, who prefer to go n fighting in the name of Poland, Are hoping that the remnaits of the 2d corps will be allowed to take part in the war against Japan. They do Not ask for much, these proud and -stubborn Poles, but they do ask not to be sent back to Poland against their will They feel that the services they have rendered in the war against .the Germans have earned them at least the right to live out their lives ih exile.
