Soft Lives of Germans in Norway Angers Norwegians

Ordinary sol-
diers can be seen walking about the] streets of this town and along the country roads. Last 8 ] morning, as we] left the ancient] church at Ring= saker, south of here, we saw two officers gallop by on blueblooded | steeds. There is little mote control over these people than you would find at an American military academy and in some respects less. Most of the Germans still occupy | the camp at Novemoen, one and|

one-half miles north of Lillahammer. In the camp are 40 warehouses, many of them full of foog. Three tare full of aquavit. Until a few days ago when the { Norwegian home forces received | permission to intervene, the Ger= | mans were drinking as much as they wished. Although it has been stated time {and again by the allied authorities {in Oslo that German rations are strictly controlled, there is, in fact, no effective allied control over the amount of food which the Germans take from these warehouses and consume. | German officers, of course, are [still allowed to retain their sidearms “in order to, alien order {among the men.’ *. This ‘resulted in a pretty little incident at Hovemoen early last Saturday when a {German captain shot and fatally wounded a Russian war prisoner. Two Russians showed up. at the {gate of the camp at 4 a. m. and {began to abuse the sentry. As the row increased in volume, | Capt. Wolfgang Blell, an ordnance {officer from the headquarters of the { 20th German mountain army, came lout of the barracks and shot one [in the back with his automatic.
Norwegians Resentful
Other rows in the neighborhood have been exaggerated by rumor, but the atmosphere is not nice, The| Norwegians naturally resent the| {continual sight of German officers {and men wandering freely about | their streets, or along country roads. Russian prisoners, of whom there {are several hundred in the neighborhood, also resent the Germans. | There are about 200 of them still |in Hovemoen camp, and it is their | habit to try to filch food out of the German warehouses. The Russians, who have been through living hell as prisoners here in Norway, can be excused for wanting to stuff themselves as long as the Germans can do the same. The Germans, by this’ date, seem to have established in their minds the idea that they enjoy the rights of normal citizens. A few days ago the Norwegian home forces discovered that civilians and soldiers housed in the Nordsaeter camp, seven miles from here, had strayed from their precinct. The Germans calmly explained that they had to expand their area in order to reach a place where they would be able to bathe this summer,

The Akron and Macon both were destroyed in disasters during the thirties. The Akron fell into the ocean off New Jersey during a storm in 1933, and the Macon into San Francisco bay in 1935. Sees Discharge Age Cut to 37
WASHINGTON, June 15 (U. P.).—Rep. Forest A. Harness (R. Ind), said today that he hoped the army would reduce the age for automatic discharge—regardless of points—from 40 to 36 or 37. Harness, a member of the house military affairs committee, said ‘this was a “hope,” and that as far as he knew nothing had been finally decided. It is probable that the age will be lowered, he said, because many men eligible for discharge under the point system have. indicated a preference to remain in the service. He thought the age limit thus could be lowered without reducing the 6.900,000 men the army intends to retain to carry on the war against Japan. The number of points required for discharge will be reduced soon. The necessary number is now 85. .
