Mr, Stoneman foreigner, had justly earned his repuiation as the first Norwegian of “Norway, Haakon first saved his country from national disaster in April, 1940 when he left Oslo as the Germans arrived and later, at Elverum, refused to accept German dictation Came Home Tired He saved it a second time, in lace trimmed September, 1940, when . from London he enjoined his people not to allow the formation of a new gov-

erhiment subservient to the Germans. It is fair to say that had it not been for the fact that King Haakon, acting as representative of the best and the bravest of the Norwegians, there could have been no jubilation yesterday. Old and fatigued, Haakon was pretty well finished when he returned home, still speaking his na- | tive Danish and appearing to like it. But Thor himself would have envied Haakon’s welcome and any other member of royalty in the world would have done the same. Duty Well Done Except for Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, Haakon was the only exiled head of a royal house in Europe who could return to his country without any qualms about his reception and his people's feelings. An additional source of strength to the Norwegian royal house is Crown ‘Prince Olav, the vigorous, cieancut only son -of King Haakon, who has grown. 20 years in political stature during the five years he has been in exile with his father. To non-Norwegians, royalty yesterday seemed to be enjoying an Indian summer. To Norwegians, a very fine ‘man who has done his duty was simply receiving his just deserts, oii
