They were [saved because of a combination of circumstances, the Rev. Mr. HensJey says. ©. | First of all, they had the benefit of the seafaring knowledge of Capt. Edgar Waaler who could positively “smell land,’~and a few rations, a compass, a chart, much faith and many prayers. No formal religious services were held but a spiritual atmosphere prevailed, the men fully recognizing their danger. The ship was about 1400 miles west of Australia when the Japanese fired on it, but unfavorable winds prevented the escaping passengers from reaching there. Instead, they landed 400 miles south of Calcutta and were befriended by the Good Samaritan hospital at Chicacole. They covered 3125 miles, called a record journey for a life boat. The. Rev. Mr. Hensley is the father of Mrs. Dellis: Bafford of Indianapolis - and the brother-in-law of the Rev. Raymond Hoekstra, the Calvary Tabernacle pastor. He is a , Pentecostal missionary to China, speaks both the Mandarin and Cantonese languages and has served with the South Ching Baptist: Relief committee and the National Christian Service council. He has also lectured for United China relief.
