Benefit Game; Officials Meet Tonight ee
. Sen. A. B.. Happy) Chandler, baseball's new “commissioner, will be in Indianapolis June 13 for a gala baseball program to be sponsored by Junior. Baseball, it was announced: today. J. R. Townsend, president of the junior baseball program in Lhe city, said that funds from the benefit game at Victory field be{ween the Kansas City Blues and ‘the Indians would be used to further the organization here. Chandler put his stamp of. ap-proval-on the jimior and American . Legion baseball plans soon after accepting the commission post. He said that part of his plan to popularize the sport would be to lend major league assistance to the _ youth programs. A meeting will be held tonight at the Central Y. M. C. out details for the benefit and for other events arranged for next month, Townsend announced. - Clinie Arranged Junior Baseball has arranged’ a clinic for June 2 at Victory; field and will sponsor the appearance of Father Flanagan of Boy's Town, Neb, at Cadle tabernacle on June’6. Team managers and officials are expected to attend the meeting 1 tonight at 7:30. Townsend said that the Victory field affair had not, been worked out, but present plans call for a curtain-raiser between possibly the Junior champs -and another team vet to be picked. Several baseball notables are expected to come to Indianapolis for ie program. : Has Athletic Background Chandler has an authentic ath- . letic background in addition to being an ardent fan in all sports. He won letters in baseball, basket- | ball and football at "Fransylvania, | captained the cagers in 1919 and "20, pitched on the baseball team, played end and quarterback in football - creditably despite injuries. He also served as a cheerleader. Chandler was graduated. from Transylvania in 1921 after spending the summer of 20 in the Red River Valley - baseball league of North-Dakota, where he was paid $150 a month and expenses, more | money than he had ever earned in his life, - Later he served as a high school | coach while studying law ana before entering politics in 1929.
