| OFFICER STICKS T0 NAZI DEAS

We Didn’t Start War,’ Says; Product . of Hitler.

BY JACK BELL Times Foreign Correspondent WITH U. 8. 7th ARMY IN AUSTRIA, May 14 (Delayed).—“The Russians would come at us, 10 0 out one; yes, 15 to our one. “They would come until we tired of shooting. - Finally they overwhelmed us. ~ : “The Russians kept dying because the Jews had pistols at their backs. The Jews started % this war, not the § Germans — and Rae the capitalists, who do as the Jews ay. : “Goeringisa } rapitalist now. That is why he. Mr. Bell asked Hitler to let him negotiate peace, The capitalists stopped this war. But for them I'd be fighting yet.” The above quotes are from the lips of a well educated, intelligent German officer, a young man of charming manners and alert brain, but who has had . opportunity to hear only Nazi teachings for the past 10 years. * At times we seemed to be conversing with two men—a courageous and thorough tank officer, and an excited young Nazi with violent prejudices no one could shake. He would have taken tanks into a death trap if ordered to do so. He expressed every precept of the true soldier and: there was no doubting his sincerity. | In fact, he is in the position of {many thousands here: dier, Germany has no army now, so my life is ruined, there is nothing for me.” A change to a life of productivity is beyond his comprehension just

Events which should have caused {this Nazi to stop and think had no effect. As an example, he was | wounded badly and, though not an 8.8. man, was rushed to an S.S. hospital because it was close. “It was in Austria,” hé said, “and 8.8, wounded were being moved, too. As ambulances went through the streets we actually were ma-chine-gunned. That's how the Austrians hated the 8.8.” I had asked myself a few days before how German soldiers had felt when they saw the Austrians waving and cheering the American troops. This German officer gave -us the answer in bitter tones: “These people; last week we were their brothers.” he cried. “Now they turn from us and cheer you, our enemies.” The Russian armies he holds in contempt because the Nazi armies were “better, man for man and gun for gun; because the Russians made stupid mistakes afield.” Obviously he never thought of the fact that the Russians were fighting for. their homeland and had something for which to die.
