A commercial photographer assigned his equipment to the navy, enlisted and served “two years. When ‘he was discharged, he was unable to get his equipment back and W. P. B. couldn't help him get new equipment, A New Jersey coal dealer wanted to get back in his business after being discharged but he had been in the army on the quota fixing date. Solid fuels administration could give him no coal supply. An Illinois veteran spent two months trying to get an insur G. I. loan to enter the trucking business. He finally financed the deal privately, but found himself blocked by the O, D..T. “grandfather” rule requiring that he show previous operations in the business. He had worked for a trucker “and had driven “army trucks, but this didn't... qualify him, Two other Illinois veterans who wanted to go into the Jocal de= livery business were turned down for gasoline rations because they didn’t own a vehicle. VARIETY OF
Legion Heeks Action
But the*American Legion, which says that 40 per cent of post-war Jobg must be provided in sales, servlce and distribution fields, contends the agencies have made “scarcely f dent” in their restrictive fields The Legion is pressing congress for action on twin bills by Senator McFarland (D, Ariz), and Rep. Ervin (D. N. C.), which would permit veterans to buy up to $5000 worth of goods or materials without regard to priorities, rationing or allocation, : Exemption certificates would be issued by the veterans administras= tion and these would set aside : regulations of O. P, A, W. P. B, O. D. T, war food administration, petroleum administration for war * and the surplus board. O., P. A. recently relaxed its ration rules to permit veterans to open small businesses making use of rationed foods, a field- hitherto closed to newcomers. The Legion said it was “gratifled” that O. P, A, had made a start but added that “such relaxations do not begin to meet the ! over-all problem.” ‘Said National Commander Edward N,.Scheiberling: “They will let veterans become potato-chip fryers—to use O.
