Nearly every Indianapolis public | school teacher is scheduled for two | pay raises, ! | The action came last night when | the school board adopted a new | | salary schedule providing for auto=- | matic increases annually. All teachers will go on the one new schedule in September with most receiving a $100 raise. There will be a further advance going to everyone Jan. 1, 1946, at a rate of $100, $75 or $50, depending on length of service and training. The schedule - will operate on a basis of minimums and maximums. Held Still Inadequate An increase of $100 a year will go to teachers without a degree in the salary range of $1700 to $2600 a year; $75 for those with a 'B. A. degree, in the $2600 fo $3200 range, and $50 to those with a M. A. degree in the range of $3200 to $3400. Carl F, Brandt, board president, said that teacher pay still was inadequate. but that larger ®dvances were impossible at the present time. “The increases will cost $300,000 a year and the necessity of making commensurate increases for nonteaching employees, the budget requirement for sick leave and other budget increases hinder the possibility,” he said, High school . principals, vice principals and members of the school city administrative staff were raised in propértion to the teachers with a ceiling of $6250 placed on the salary for high- school principal. Walter McCarty, president and general manager of The Indianapolis News, and Mark Ethridge. publisher.of The Louisville Courier Journal and The Louisville Times, left today for a tour of the Pacific ocean area. Traveling as personal guests of Secretary of the Navy Forrestal, they expect to return about the middle of May and will visit Pearl Harbor and advanced bases in the Pacific. The trip will be made by navy air transport.
