previous reports of Mallory performance is responsible for this
brief account of what a typically. Indianapolis industry is doing. Thousands of
Indianapolis men and women are making a real contribution to war production at the
eight Mallory plants and you may like to know a little about-their accomplishments.
Our 1944 contribution to Indianapolis industry is summarized in the following table:
we
We received from the sale of our products. .
Which gave us a total income for the year; o
Out of this amount we paid out, or are obligated to pay out: For materials and supplies including purchases from sub-contractors .
For payrolls to our empl
For taxes and refunds to re Government
For maintenance of plants, machinery and equipment, rentals, telewer, administrazive costs, income set aside to replace worn-
phone; out facilities, and to provide Sperating reserves For post-war contingency reserve. For dividends to our stockholders.
‘The Record
Virtually all of this volume represents war effort— the making of precision products in the fields of metallurgy, electronics and ‘electro-chemistry. Our 1944 production was 314 times as great as in 1941 and represented a healshy increase over 1943, Our products cover a wide range of parts used in aircraft, . ships, tanks, trucks and other mobile equipment; in ordnance, communications and various items of war materiel. Most of these parts are our regular products * adapted to war uses; many, however, are specially designed for military purposes.
‘Outstanding among our products are Mallory Silver-Bonded Bearings which provide reliable performance in aircraft engines ranging from Super Fortresses to fighter planes. The Bearings Division made. a magnificent production record last year.
Of great significance is the few Mallory’ Tropical Dry Battery, originated by Mallory for the U. S. Army Signal Corps. It is an invention of great importance in overcoming the serious handicaps to jlicay field communications occasioned by extreme
The Challenge
While we are proud of our war production record, we regard it as a challenge for the future rather than a matter for selfscongratulation. Our present sales volume, stimulated by war, and our future potentials are tied tightly to the investments we have made in brains, working skills, plant and equipment. We have grown tremendously, but our growth has been the outcome of meetifig needs which we have felt equipped to handle. Never have we been ambitious to fill all the needs of arly market. Always have we sought to become the leader in quality and service.
For ‘the future, we must continue to meet the challenge of our markets to develop products that give better service, whether that service leads to reater volume or whether, in peacetime, it results in lower volume because of the results accomplished.
Moreover, we recognize the challenge to Management involved in our responsibility to employes. We believe in the doctrine of high wages. We believe - in setting standards rather than in following them.’ To meén and women who make their jobs in our Company their life work, we recognize our duty to provide the greatest possible opportunity to gain proper reward for the quality of their efforts. High ' wages, along with the most advantageous working conditions, shape the key to prosperity for “the individual corporation as well as for the nation.

temperatures and intense humidity. Production of the Mallory Tropical Dry Battery has necessitated the erection ofa new plafit, hundreds of new employes and the development of highly specialized machinery. ~~ Volume production is growing every day to further increase Mallory’s usefulness to cntical war efforts.
So reads the record of Mallory products. Fidelity to the job and high morale have won for Mallory employes high recognition from military procurement authorities. Cooperation has enabled us to train many for new skills, to usefully employ the physically handicapped in skilled work, to offer wider opportunities to ambitious workers. With it all, production standards have been of the precision quality that speaks well for the prestige of our products in the _ future. This, in turn, forms an encouraging background for our plans for post-war-full employment.
Eleven hundred and fourteen Mallory ‘men and women are serving with the armed forces. The gold stars in our service flag number fifteen; and seven additional men are reported missing in action.
of the Future
High wages, of course, are possible only with efficient productign. On Management is imposed the responsibility of furnishing the most effective equipment and proper working conditions. Reciprocally, ~ labor must provide wholehearted cooperation and the quality craftsmanship that eliminates waste, indifferent effort and unnecessary restrictions. . . It is gratifying to report genuine progress in these directions. Much remains to be done, both physically and psychologically. Closer understanding exists between Management and plant personnel. New ideas have been introduced; in the first stages of+ development is an incentive basis for the reward of
‘ . employe brains as well as employe hands.
"4 As long as the war continues, we will stick to our war production job. We are certain that Mallory employes feel their responsibilities to war production - as keenly as does Management. But we look forward to the day, when we may put to peacetime use the facilities, the knowledge and the opportunities we have gained in war production. We recognize our responsibilities not only to Mallory workers bit to the community of which they are a part. It is our ambition to have this community regard Mallory as an ideal place to work. We, in turn, must forward - every ¢ffort that tends to establish our community as an ideal spot in which to live.
v
We look forward to the future with confidence and a iy belief that the Mallory ‘organization will contribmie much in maintaining employment and prosperity in this arza.
