Put your problems in a lettér to Jane Jordan, who will answer Jory questions in this column daily.
DEAR JANE JORDAN—I am a girl 14 years old. Almost all the kids 1 run around with are 16, 17 or 18. Naturally they get to go more places
and do more things than I, but I just can’t understand why I can't do
at least some of the things that they get to do. © I know that niy mother and father are trying to bring me up the|
best they possibly can. but* if they only would let me do — things and go places as the other kids do, I wouldn't have to lie to them in order to gO. There js one place in particular that I enjoy .go-
; ing to and that is
our Teen -Canteen, but my parents have decided that I shouldn't go there now. They think I go there just beeause of the boys when Jane Jordan all I want is to dance. Naturally some boy asks to walk home-with me and then fhey get mad.
* They now say that any place 1
me. If only they would let me! flone and let me do the things that | everyone else gets to do! 1 would] never lie again, but it seems impossible. What would you advise? + TROUBLED. Answer—You brought your troubles on yourself by running around with an older crowd when you would have had an easier time by growing up gradually and taking your privileges fs they came. Instead you want lo grow up all at once without any intermediate experiences, without bothering yourself to learn what these other young people have learned. © Did "you. .skip several
go. they are going to come after
grades at school? you want to skip several grades of ~ social experience? = First of all stop your lying and |
They get mad d at me When 1 tell them stories,
[try to be your age. Don't fib, even to yourself, about why you like the Teen-Canteen. You can't have fun dancing without boys. Very likely your behavior at home is still 14 although you want your parents to treat you like an 18-year-old girl. Take more responsibility at home|; if you want your parents to recognize your maturity. Don't press too hard for the freedom to act as a grown |— young lady when you've given no evidence that you are so advanced. Bit by bit you'll win their confidence in your ability to take care of yourself under all circumstances. If your parents are willing to come after you when you go to the TeenCanteen, or other fun centers, accept their offer and be gracious about
‘Other 14-year-olds do this, and inot all of. them are lucky enough to have parents willing to call for them. Take it easy. Each year will bring you closer to the freedom of action you crave. You're moving a bit.too swiftly for them now. JANE JORDAN.
