LOSES HAND BUTT

Paratrooper Not Sorry as Long as Foe Died.

By GERALD R. THORP Times Foreign. Correspondént _ MANILA, March 23—From 8 Philippines notebook: Lt. Mike Donahoe, Dowagiac, . Mich., had occasion, the other day, to interview three civilian prisoners at Agoo, a town hastily abandoned Ei © by the Japs in * the face of the ¢ 33d division's’ E drive, Donahoe found ¥ the jail without a roof, bars or doors and the . prisoners A. W. O. L. He reported his discoyery to the mayor, who ’ smilingly exMr. Thorp plained that the prisgners had gone home for lunch and would return shortly. The night was black and a Chicago paratrooper in southern Luzon could see only a few feet beyond his foxhole. 4 Suddenly a Jap leaped from his, hiding place 20 feet away, screamed and charged. The Yank pulled the pin from a grenade and ducked as the Jap swung his sword and jumped into the foxhole. Hand Amputated The Japs hand was on the soldier's throat and his sword was poised in the air for the final sweep The Chicagoan pressed the sputtering grenade against the Nip's head. ‘A few minutes later at the aid station, a medical officer expressed sympathy as the paratrooper stoically watched the surgeon amputate his hand. “Feel sorry for me,” he said. “I'd trade my life for one hand any day, especially with a dead Jap tossed in for good measure.” Brig. Gen. William C. Chase, commanding officer of the 38th division, takes great delight in -recounting an incident that occurred a few days ago in the Subic Bay area. Jap Surrenders A navy officer was taking a shower on the beach. He turned around to be confronted by a smiling, neatly uniformed Jap, armed with hand grenades and two rifles. “The Jap made a sweeping bow and laid his weapons at the officer’s feet, ? “1 surrender,” he said The flustered officer shouted “Go away—if you've gotta surrender, surrender to the army.” The Jap shuddered and his. eyes became tear-filled as he pleaded “Not thal, not that. Please. I much prefer the navy.” »
