Purdue to Run Winter Forest
Times Special CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind, March 20.—Purdue university has acquired the Jonathan Winter forest reserve tract, northwest of Darlington. The university will operate this, it is understood, as a demonstration tract in scientific timber growing. This reserve had been maintained by Mr. Winter as a state controlled project for many years, being 57 acres of the old Winter homestead. Lye creek, runs through the land, and at this location is a rocky, tumbling stream, always a fisherman's paradise, The timber is largely sugar tree, with considerable oak, .'sycamore, elm and other variation, and is in excellent
State of vigorous growth, due largely to Mr. Winter's care. Mr. Winter died in May, 1944,
at the age of 95, “having lived his entire life on his home farm of some 300 acres. The remaining | main farm has the bulk of the valuable timber, said to be the finest stand of large virgin white
