of the American “ Red Cross. The first women who met our wounded when they came back from Utah beach, on the rebound, were those same

girls. They didn't look quite so fresh, but they still Mr. Stoneman were dishing out coffee, doughnuts, cigarets,

newspapers and even larger doses of smiles and cheer. Throughout the intervening months our battered, veterans, pouring back to England for treatment here, or for shipment home, have been given the same feminine touch

tarv—they are doing" everything that the army officially cannot do

Here are just a few things they are doing, as of March, 1945. Monumental and unforgettable work is .being. done in American hospitals * where trained Red Cross recreational. workers, assisted by 2000 British women volunteers, provide recreational facilities and social services, Overhead Cut Down

An army of British volunteers, working ih the clubs and Red Cross headquarters cuts the overhead down to a minimum. The Red Cross cperates. 17 air force rest homes and two convalescent homes for ground men, 127 service and officers’ clubs, 118 field clubs and «46 “doughnut dugouts’— small coke, coffee and doughnut spots, catering to pint-sized units. More than 150 clubmobile girls are working at American airbases in- England, giving coffee- and doughnuts to air crews, and paying strict attention to our less glamorous, but equally topflight ground crews. : Visit British Homes

In a prodigious attempt to satisfy the incessant longing of Amer-, ican: men for home life, the Red Cro¢s has arranged for more than 1.000.000 officers #nd men to visit British homes during the last six months. The newest service provided by a wide-awake administration is the “trainmobile.” Eight of these units, manned by doughnut girls, ride the leave trains, bringing American veterans to London for seven-day leaves from the front lines. For those soldiers who do ‘hot have their own definite—ideasof what they want to do or see in England, the Red Cross provides all the “services once performed by the American express for prewar tourists. | Probably the best advice for anybody who is inclined to. fumble in ‘his pockets when Ah ERTIES Hs To, rigive and give" tos {thé Bed Cross, Js to ask a. man who has “been there.” He knows.
