verest critics was dead today. He is C. Roger Benjamin, executive secretary ,of the Indianapolis Taxpayers’ association,

Mr. Benjamin was a colorful and|

familiar: figure at i city and county ; council sessions and public meetings in which tax funds - were dis cussed. He died yester- '§ day at City hospital. following an illness of two | months. .- He was 1 52 and lived at 4329 Park ave. Mr. Benjamin was known by many as an eloquent, razor- -tongued foe of high public salaries and pork-barrel spending. Since he be-| came taxpayers" association secretary three years ago, there was hardly a civic issue in which he. didn’t participate in behalf of economy and reduced taxes. Pree-spending shrank from his accusing finger Because of his wealth of statistical information he exerted a powerful ¢ influence at budget-making con‘ferefices. i In-these sessions he not only sought to curtail budget items which he thought were unnecessary, but also volunteered as a sort of exofficio adviser.

Fought for Tax Savings

Shortly before becoming ill; Mr Benjamin had launched a fight in

he legislature. against the Indianipolis slum-clearance plan.

He opposed the step because he -harged that, while it called for ad-| itional taxes, the legislative proosal failed to provide for adequate | ublic controfs over the funds. Although not a politician, Mr ‘enjamin frequently plunged - into val factional squabbles in his] Forts to press for tax savings. | He criticized the Marion county | ymmissioners for what he believed | as exorbitant spending, and he tterly opposed a recent city adinistration move to install a “semierit” system at city hall

cold discomforts eased quickly!

I ——

With colds a constant threat these days, it makes good sense to keep a supply of Bayer Aspirin on hand. It's one of the best relievers of painful cold discomforts: known to science, 1. Because it acts so fast. Its two-second disintegrating action means it starts working almost instantly. 2. Because it's so completely reliable. It's the only aspirin with a #0.year record of successful use by millions of people. Remember—when you buy aspirin, buy wisely. Insist on genuine Bayer Aspirin. You can tell the real thing by the name “Bayer” stamped in the form of a cross on cach tablet,
