~ Dream of Peacetime Utorta Shattered

By FREDERICK C. OTHMAN United Press Staff Correspondent

WASHINGTON, March 8-—My beautiful dream went .glimmering today. The government rudely woke me up. My “hope come ‘the end of the war was to drop by the filling station, order a tank load of hightest and for the hell of it, splash an extra gallon on the ground. I'd drive down town, making the tires squeak at every corner, and buy six pairs of shoes. I'd order up a porterhouse steak, drench, it with butter, and float it in catsup. I'd Jet my porch light burn the live-long night, and it I should see a horse I'd hand him a five- pound box of sugar. You get the idea: It was an elegant dream, Then: Blooie. a - 8 8 IT AIN'T going to happen. None of it. Congress now is holding hearings and is about to pass a law extending the OPA and the WLB for another 18 months. That will bring us up to Decem-

* ber, 1946, war or no war, and I

wouldn't be surprised if I'm still arguing with my ratiop ~board (Hiya Pals?) 10 years from now. William H. Davis, chairman of the war labor board, told about it in testimony before the senate banking and currency commit= tee. He was in the midst of spieling off some of the doggonest

statistics . you ever heard, when |

word came that President Roosevelt had appointed him director of economic stabilization. 8 8 =n, THE pink-faced Davis, whose eyes are big behind thick-lensed spectacles and whose- hair looks as though he forgot to comb it—

- .. did not seem surprised at this

word from the White House. But that is beside the point. Davis said Re. couldn't prices go up after the war — or wages, . either—or. we'd be running into inflation. That, he said, would be the worst possi= ble inequality to impose upon the American people. He went on to say that the buyer gets the short end of the deal in these days of substitutions. He can say that again.

Controls of wages and prices, !

reminds me,

exclaimed Senator T heodore Francis Green of Rhode Island.

“I- just want to point out that yesterday I tried to get some laundry done. The man said he couldn't do it, because your board wouldn't let him raise wages 80 he could get more help.” “I don’t think we could — -—" began Davis. : “I think,” interrupted Senator Green, “that you'd better call 'em dirty collar workers.” Davis smiled weakly, and that One more thing in

“WHITE COLLAR workers!”,

my beautiful dream: I'd have a clean shirt every day .and two on Sunday. And when I wore a hole in my sock I'd throw {t away.
