BARNABY

r:

By Crockett Johnson

Cushlamochree! Borrowing a nickel from your bank has suggested a way to obtain the somewhat larger sum | need fo become a financier!

My bank

is nearly

... and Grace phoned me today. It's been years since | saw her. . And she’s got a fine job ds a secrefary in Dormant & Company.

Dormant? The big investment bankers?

Yes. They float bonds and things. Well, anyway, I'm meeting her af her office and she and | and Barnaby will have lunch together—

You're taking Barnaby?

JANE JORDAN

Put your problems in a letter to Jane Jordan, who will answer your questions in this eolumn dally.

DEAR JANE JORDAN-I

am a boy .16 years old, have a nice home

and get the things I need, but I like to play basketball. I play for a team in the church league but my father only lets me go out one night

week and that 1s the night when we play our games.

Now we are

going to practice the night before the game and that will require me to be out two nights, but my father won't let me go and I don’t know

why. “When I go to a game he doesn’t say anything, and when I come back he doesn't ask who won or how many points I got. How pan I get him to let me go out two nights and how can I get him to take a little interest in me when 1 go to play a game? Other athers are interested in thelr son's ability, but my dad isn't. I Jane Jordan gtudy my lessons hard before I go 0 a game, BASKETBALL LOVER. ny 8 » Answer—Have you ever invited your father to go to a game with you? If he refuses the first time, don't be discouraged. Ask him very time you play. If this doesn't ork, ask some of the other fathers vho enjoy the game to invite your father to go with them. You say you study hard before a ame. Are your grades all they ould be? If they are then get some older person in the church vho is interested in the game to

explain to your™ather that you are needed on practice nights. Perhaps that would influence him in your favor. Perhaps vour father wasn't interested in basketball in his youth. Well, what was he interested in at age 16? Ask him. Perhaps if you interest yourself in him he will become more interested in you. - All children would be happier if their parents were intercsted in what they. do, but unfortunately the grown-ups become” so absorbed in their own problems that they have little time or inclination for companionship with their children. JANE JORDAN,
