'I'll Be Back,’ He Said and
Died—His House Still Waits
By ESTELLE BOND United Press Staff Correspondent
CUTTINGSVILLE, Vt.,, Feb, 22, © Sixty years have elapsed since
melancholy John Bowman died. Yet his gingerbread-style mansion in this snowbound village is faithfully kept ready for him in case he keeps his deathbed promise—"I'll be back.” #8 8. ‘ THE CLOCK on the mantelpiece still ticks off the hours, Windows gleam in spotless brilliance. Scarcely a speck of dust can be found in the many-rqomed house. Lovely old Victorian furniture, polished to a satin finish, Invites repose, There's food in the pantry. The drives and walks are cleared of snow.
John Bowman could walk right in today and begin again the life he left in 1886.
nn» BORN a farm boy at humble Pierce's Corner, six miles from here in 1820, Bowman worked his way up in the best Horatio Alger tradition to become a wealthy tannery operator in Stony Creek,
NN. VY,
At 40 he took a wife who bore him two daughters and, having cnough of wealth, came here and built the elaborate home. But misfortune shattered. his dream of pastoral retirement. In quick succession his daughters and wife died. Neighbors said that John Bowman never smiled egain. | sx = HE SOLD his tannery and purchased the acres opposite his home here. : On this land he created what is now beautiful Laurel Glen cem-

elery. He organized an association to supervise the property permanently and endowed it*with a $50,000 trust fund. -~ Within the plot he built an elaborate mausoleum. A life-size statute of Bowman on bended knee with a wreath in his hand was placed before the entrance of the tomb # 8.» DURING the ensuing five years Bowman pined away and finally took to his bed. : One day he seemed to brighten a little. He ordered that his elothes be brought and then on the arm of a male nurse toured the house. Lovingly he looked at the high-
ceilinged rooms, the old furniture; |
the pictures of his wife and children. At the foot of the stairs
. he stopped and said:
“I'll soon be leaving for a little while, but I'll be coming back.”

THE NURSE carried him to his |

cemetery trustees, who began the | task of keeping the house ready |
for John Bowman. Then another, Samuel 8. Smith, took over the task. : But for the past 35 years the duties have been faithfully performed by George 'N. Jones, now 80. " o o SEVERAL times, Jonés said, he’s had to discourage visits of persons claiming they were the reincarnation of John Bowman. But never once has ‘he neglected
“his “work of keeping Bowman's
house open.
‘Everything's ready if he comes “but I for one |
