‘Can't Help Jp Singing’ Brings
Color to Indiana: |
Deanna Durbin, for the first time in techilicolor, came to the Indiana | theater yesterday in a saga of the west, “Can't Help Singing.” Robert Paige of Indianapolis is teamed -as | the male romantic lead and does al fine bit of singing along with the
beautiful voice of Miss Durbin, Jerome Kern and KE. Y. Harburg wrote seven songs for the produc-| tion. They include “More and More” “Can't Help Singing,” “El-|™ bow Room. *Californ-i-ay,’ “Any | Moment Now” and “Swing Your | Sweetheart 'Round the Fire | The story, laid in 1849, opens in| Washington, D, C. Deanna, in love with a young army officer by David Bruce, sets out to him to the west coast. En meets Paige, a gambler whom she engages to drive her covered wagon Ther: she falls in love “with him There's a merry mixup when the three meet in Sonora, but it all comes out all right with Paige as the true lover, Most of the picture was filmed out of doors and contains some of the most striking scenic shots brought to the Screen in technicolor. | Akim Tamiroff and Leonid Kins-| key are funny as a pair of petty] crooks. Ray Collins does a good job as Deanna's pompous senator-| father. And Andrew Tombes comes through fine as a fast-talking swindler,
