Vice President of Ringling Bros. Gets 1 to 5 Years, Manager 2 to 7.

HARTFORD, Coll, Feb. 33 (U. P.). Five officials and an employee of he Ringling Brothers-Barnum & [Bailey circus yesterday were held re-| . ponsible for the fire which killed a 168 persons last July. They were sentenced to prison on eir pleas of nolo contendere to harges of involuntary manslaughter. 2 ~The efficials Included James A. Haley, vice president of the circus corporation, and its general manger, George W, Smith. All six appeared thunderstruck when Superfor Court Justice william J. Shea ordered them to prison for terms p to a maximum of sever years. In addition, he fined the circus| orporation $10,000, the maximum penalty, The men had expected to be revarded for saving the state the expense of a long trial by their nolo ontendere pleas by being let off with fines,

Some Sentences Stayed

“All of these accused are guilty of involuntary manslaughter,” ustice ‘Shea said. “The impostion hf sentence in criminal cases is not a punishment but rather as a basis or the reformation of the accused.” Justice Shea ruled that Wililam Caley, boss seatman, would have to begin his one-year jail term at once. He stayed execution of the bther sentences until April. 6. The circus opens its season in fadison Square Garden, New York ity, April 4. The sentences were: Haley—one to five years, Smjth—two to seven, hief Canvassman Leonard SS. ylesworth—two to seven, David W, Blanchfield—six months, Electrician Edward R. Versteeg—one year, and aley—one year on each count,
