WILLIAMS SAYS ..
NEW YORK, F eb. 14.—Have you noticed how many fine, stalwart, fighting friends baseball has developed all of a sudden in Washington? All sorts of dignitaries are rushing to its support . .-. “it's a grand old game “it’s an American institution” . .. “it's what the boys in the fox holes are fighting for.” Hmgimmm . . .'this wouldn’t have anything to 20 with the fact” that ‘the fathers have decided to give the commissioner's $50,000 Job. to an outsider, would it? . . . I was just agking. - J, Edgar Hoover shilled all over the federal bureau of investigation for the grand old game recently, which, by an odd coincidence, was the day after the fathers let it be known they had thrown the job wide open. Mr, Hoover invited baseball to send its representatives to Washington for counsel and comfort . . . “every door will be open at their knock,” he promised.
CI)
Sen. Chandler ‘Bangs Out Solid Wallop’
ALSO recently Senator Happy Chandler of Kentucky stepped to the plate for the American institution and banged out a solid wallop for the 4-F'ers, upon whose immediate fate baseball depends. “The happy senator said high government officials have no objections to. “four or five hundred 4-F's playing professional baseball.” , , ; This is tantamount to promising the fathers they are all set for 1945. Is J. Edgar after the job? . . . Is Happy after the job? . . Well, this wouldn't indicate they are running away from it, would it?
Situation in Coast League Hard to Fathom
OWNER of the plushiest race track on the west coast is Dr. Charles Strub. Additionally, he is, and has been, for a long stretch of years part owner. of the San Francisco club in the Pacific Coast league. 1 made mention of this fact not long ago in connection with the enforced retirement of one Harry Ludwig as leader of the Sacramento club in. the same league. . His retirement was compelled by the commissioner's office in Chicago. . . . It seems he is engaged in the pinball business or some such.
Acceptable When Baseball Needed Him
WHAT interested me was that Ludwig was clearly acceptable to the baseball fathers a year or so ago, when the Bt. Louis Cardinals” threatened to take baseball out of Sacramento (they operated a farm club there) and Ludwig, Jallsing the local citizenry, saved the franchise. I psked: If he was acceptable then, why not now? And, just to be onery, I wondered out loud, how Strub, the race track operator, continued to remain in baseball despite the “firm taboo.” And, in wrapping this item up, I hasten to add I'm not shilling for the aforementioned Ludwig and pinball games.

UNITED PRESS DePauw's Tigers and Wabash's Little Giants, who first met on the basketball court 39 years ago,. renew their rivalry tonight at Crawfordsville with the Indiana Collegiate conference cage championship bid of DePauw hanging in the balance, A Tiger victory would give DePauw the crown for the second straight year.
