technicians have done a great deal with radar and quite a below-the-surface controversy has been stirred up by claims and counter-claims over who Is responsible for this development or that, and who should get the credit —and patents. Many radar sets are either so obsolete or so well known by the Nazis
that publicity wouldn't be harmful.
To forestall any public bickering over who gets credit on radar, the! joint chiefs of staff are expected to detail what has been done and who
did it.

Who Says We' ve Made Much
Progress’ in Car. Designs?
By JOHN W. LOVE Scripps-Howard Stam Writer CLEVELAND, Feb, 13.—They say the 1950 automobiles will come out in tear-drop ‘modernism, with plastics and light ‘metals, maybe a
minnow engine back under the seat.
But what I want to know is
whether we will be able to put chains on the wheels and keep the clutch from going to pieces in a month of -arctic weather. In short; hew soon can we get back to the car of 1910, that good
old rugged Rambler or Maxwell? Progress? Shucks, I've written about ~ “progress” in’ ‘automobile,
design for 30 years, boy and man,
and now we have a winter that carries our streets and roads backward “over all that. period, back to 1915, and leaves. us sitting in our modern * luxury” cars waiting for the Service truck’ to Fisk us up. 5 » n : IT'S TIME to re-examine this idea of progress. The auto builders have gone hog-wild on progress, forgetting all about the oldfashioned winters. They've de~ signed cars to look pretty in a tropical landscape, they've flared and flounced the fenders and made the wheels inaccessible, and fixed the windshield so you can't raise it. They've even left off the crank! The “pioneers, "good old pioneers, they knew what they were about. Cars like Marman and Overland, Haynes and Maytag-Mason,, had wheels 34 and 36 inches high, wheels that carried the car through any quantity of snow. There was Sears-Roebuck with its . “businessman's car,” the wheels 4 feet high—why did they ever give it up? Did they think the climate was changing? They say some of those cars were underpowered, but you didn't need so much power with tires only a couple of inches across, And what's power when the wheels spin? Al] those cars had spoked wheels. You could throw the chains around them in four minutes and get them off in two, You didnt have to jack the thing up, lie on your back, change your clothes twice, or spend a Sunday afterncofi™“th home blacksmithing. - You could
actually: put chains on at night
today, week, And the clutch—there's Nay for you, built-in softness of action. But rock your car out of the drifts: every day for a month, or let the wifg do it, and you discover that for some makes the same clutches are not to be had any more, I don't know about the transmissions of the good old days, but a lot of people have been breaking the countershaft lately, just trying to get back. on the road. |. 8 . ” » » TIME WAS when a man with & dead battery could climb out,
crank his car and go right on. Today they not only forget to sell a crank but they've even closed up the crank hole. As for the windshield, the vertical style was ideal for northern weather. Come a sleet stormy and you could crank it up out of the way and see Where you were going. wd The closed car is nie ious, of course, like vitamin pills and social security, but when: the key~ hole freezes up you yearn again for an open-body job. And the seats—we were recently sold on the idea of reclining, as in" a cocktail’ lounge, but women tell me their grandmother’s car, with its straight-up seats, built for women with whalebones, would have heen more comfortable for the 1945 foundation garment. Ask the woman who owns one. : Well, I suppose this: is the course of human affairs. The chariot is prettied up and fitted with heater and radio, the population loses its vigor, climate changes, disaster comes,.the hill-
