Ash Ritual Is Due Soon:
tion Wednesday. In all Rdman Catholic churches
| Wednesday; the age-old rite of the
distribution of ashes will be ob-
served. On Ash Wednesday, before the mass, the priest blesses the ashes remaining ‘from burned palm leaves blessed the preceding Palm Sunday, The faithful kneel at the altar and receive the ashes upon their foreheads from the priest. As the priest makes the Sig of the cross upon each forehead, he says: ‘es, et in pulverem reverteris,” which means, “Remember man, that thou art dust and unto dugt thou shalt return.” Meaning of Lent
It is during Lent, especially, that Catholics seek God's mercy for themselves and do penance for their
sins. In a long pastoral letter to his parishioners, the Most Rev. Joseph E. Ritter, archbishop of Indianapolis, expresses the meaning of |Lent. Archbishop Ritter writes in part: “It {s only by prayer and by obedience to God in -faith that we are able to understand life with its problems and find the courage and strength to face them. And it. is | only by the practice of penitence (that we can make reparation for | sin, our-own and those of the world, the source of all our miseries.”
