Lease Getting Enough, 'WFA Announces.
WASHINGTON, Feb. 1 (U, P.).— The government is getting ready to take a new tuck in the already slim meat rations of civilians, war
vealed today.”
Ting enough meat tmder the present purchase program. They | warned that an upward revision | was imminent in the amounts of | beef and pork that packing plants { must reserve for government pur- | chase, The government already buys {about 40 per cent of all pork and | about 35 per cent of all beef pro- | duced; Only meat slaughtered under | federal inspection is subject to the | government set-aside. | Roughly half of all meat pro- | duced in federally inspected plants
f purchase.
Unequal Distribution
| | WFA officials said this restrietion had resulted in an unequal | distribution of available meat sup{plies. The worst shortages were] | said to have developed in areas res | lying on federally-inspected plants {for their meat, while areas supplied by small slaughterers were relatively little affected. As “a resuli: of -the pressure of {civilian demands for meat, WFA said, an increasing number of small plants have sprung up outside fed{eral inspection.. These have pulled more and more {meat animals from packing plants which supply non-civilian requirements. : To head off this tendency, WFA yesterday placed a top on the number of cattle and hogs that small slaughterers may kill and still receive the government subsidy. . Without the subsidy, officials said slaughterers would be unable to sell within ceiling price brackets. WPFA estimated that this limita-
| tion would channal another 5 or 10
per cent of all meat production to federally-inspected plants. . A cor= responding cut in civilian applies is expected to result. -
