Dec. 19 — Endless columns of prisoners pass—at first about 100, half of whom are Negroes, then another 1000. One of our cars gets stuck on the road. I get out and wolk. Gen. Ti 2 - : ” Dec. 20 — According to statements of civilians, American soldiers did not conduct themselves ‘badly at all. Mostly, they slept apart from the civilians and since they had enough to eat, were able 4 to give some to the civilians. Only the white army—Revenge—(apparently reference to one of the Belgian resistance groups) was at its worst and many persons were taken from their homes. Civilians, too, tell us that the Americans -were completely surprised when our attack started. A rumor was going that Eisenhowe rwas taken prisoner,

Dec. 34 =Dive-bombers attack us and hit a house in front of me. We take our car and race toward St. Vith where the divebombers again attack. They strafe all our roads. By 1 o'clock we counted 14 shot down by anti-aircraft, During the night more bombs fell. At 4:30 a terrific crash awakened me. Windows break and the little house seems to be falling apart. 8» »

Dec. 25—Shortly before reaching Hinderhausen we see a divebomber start for us. We stop our truck and get off the road as bullets fly about us. Nothing is seen of our air force. Where is it? Their heavy bombers fly toward the Reich, serene and undisturbed. » " 2

Dec. 26—During the afternoon we undergo <a seggnd big-scale attack on St. Vith. Great bomber formations pass and then bombs drop. Houses shake. Windows break. Terrified families seek the shelter of cellars. Babies cry but the bombers keep on coming. There's nothing left of St. Vith. . o 2 i Dec. 29—Qur division now is ordered to secure thé northern flank in the direction of Malmedy and Errieres, » » » Jan. 1—-We had hardly moved into new quarters when artillery started shelling us. » n » Jan, 10-13 —Our position is under continuous - artillery fire. Jan. 21 — Battle noises come closer to.town. We already see enemy infantry on some heights. I am organized for a last defense. Rumor has it that British Tommies (?) have surrounded: the town. Some men believe it! The higher command believes we'll be forced to yield. ‘Those rear echelon men! I am neither an optimist nor a pessimist and will not give up hope. The day is unnaturally quiet but the enemy has entirely surrounded town. I am sending back all personal belongings. One never knows. Wonder what Heidi is doing? News from the eastern front is very serious. There must be a decisive change very soon. We need submarines, airplanes. Only those things can still help us. ss = 0»

Jan. 22—Nothing new during the night but at 8 the enemy recommences saturation fire. Exactly one year ago I was in this same fix. Then, as a non-com, I was involved in the retreat north of Galhelina. The front lines are hazy now as they were then. Exactly one month ago we took St. vith.”

Lt. Behman and his notebook, for all their fine intentions of defending the position to the last, surrendered to the first Americans who entered the ruins of St. Vith and with ink scarcely dry on the last excerpt recorded above.
