That isn’t true, says a director of American Central's parent company, Aviation Corp. or at least nothing was said about it at a directors’ meeting day before yesterday and you would think they “would know all about it. The rumor probably started, he says, by the fact that Aviation Corp. has wanted a Detroit office and leased space in the Fisher building. New Deal Rallies to Save

WASHINGTON, Jan. 31 (U. P.). ~The ‘administration marshaled its forces today to save the White House-approved limited national service bill from death by amendment. House leaders were somewhat more optimistic about chances for passage, but conceded that attempts to write in controversial amendments. still threatened to kill the so-called work-or-else bill. Most. feared were proposals by Rep, Walter G. Andrews (R. N.Y.) exempting drafted workers. from closed shop agreements and by Rep. Frank Hook (D. Mich.) to give legislative sanction to the fair employment practices comission: . Proponents felt ‘that adoption” of

Service Bill From Death

either would kill the bill, which is designed to force 18-45 men to get or keep war jobs under threat of fines, prison terms, or induction. Meanwhile, the house heard arguments that only by passing stiff manpower legislation can congress prove to American fighting men that they have full support from the home front. That theme was sounded on the floor by two Republicans, Reps. Everett M. Dirksen (I11.) and Joseph O'Hara (Minn.). Reminding the house that some men have been at the front for 120 days” without replacement and that the armed forces say they need more men, Dirksen wanted to know: “How are you going to face “those boys when they come back?”

FIGURES SHOW 5000 STRIKES, LOCKOUTS

WASHINGTON, Jan. 31. (U.P.) — There were approximately 5000

strikes and lockouts in 1944, involving 2,100,000 workers and 8,500,000 man-days of idleness, according to preliminary figures released today by the bureau of labor statistics. It said ‘the idleness was two-thirds as great as in 1943. Lockouts accounted for only a small part of the time list,- but the bureau said it was unable to divide the strikes and lockouts exactly. Idleness during strikes and lockouts totaled one-tenth of 1 per cent of the available working time in 1944, compared with 0.15 per cent n 1943, 0.05 per cent in 1942 and 0.32 per cent in 1941, the bureau said. L \ Workers enumerated include all who were made idle regardless of whether or not they were involved in the dispute. Southern Weaving Co. year ended Nov. 30 net income $101,313 or $5.07 a share vs. $220,752 or $11.04 previous year.

"| ECONOMY IDEA

Dr. J. Hirsch Says Jobs for Only 54 Million Will Be A Problem.

NEW YORK, Jan. 31 (U. P.)—Dr. Hirsch, efonomist, today warned that government planners’ schemes for-

-employment; through higher foreign trade, expanded industry and public works would develop production far beyond | all consumption capacity and would widen “to_a.dangerous degree” our already large gap between production capacity and consumption development. Speaking before the luncheon meeting of the American Management association finan¢é conference, Dr. Hirsch held that employment of

40%

even 54 million persons after the war will be a problem, let alone the 60 million which the government says must be given jobs. “In order to employ even these 54 millions,” he said, “our wishful thinkers forecast an increase in our

| | consumption and investment by al-

most two-thirds as much as that of 1939. This would mean that we must eat two-thirds more food, spend two-thirds more on laundry and wear two-thirds more clothes than in 1939.

Increase Largest in History

“It has been forecast that in 1946 we will have a national income of $153 billion in prices of 1942. That would mean that between 1939 and 1046 the yearly increase of civilian consumption and investment would be almost three times as large as ever experienced in the history of this country or of any other country.” He urged business to maintain large liquid reserves and to collaborate with the administration. “The administration,” he concluded, “has promised that governmentfinanced work will be farmed out to private entrepreneurs as far as possible. Henry A. Wallace calls this system ‘free enterprise’ Whatever label we may give it, management should adjust itself to it in time and thus get its share which might
