MONDAY, JAN. 2, 5 Vichy Now Is Hospital City - « For French War Wounded
By DUDLEY ANN HARMON United Press Staff Correspondent VICHY, France, Jan. 20.—~This town recently was synonymous with intrigue and defeatism under the rule of Marshal Henri Philippe Petain, Now it is one big hospital for French battle casualties from the Alsace front, The famous Hotel Du Parc, which became headquarters for Petain and his government when he dissolved the French constitution in July, 1940, and proclaimed himself “chief of state,” has become a hospital. 8» n WOUNDED are brought daily from the army of Gen, de Lajtre Tassigny. In the streets where the Vichy government officials ‘walked armed, haphazardly dressed members of the French forces of the interior now ‘patrol in the winter sunshine, nei » jaan wey SEVERAL minor government
officials still await transportation to Paris. The families of other of« ficials who have gone to Paris | stayed here; for Vichy has more - heat and better food than Paris. An incident which caused wounded at the Hotel de La Radio, now a hospital, to complain that the Petaln spirit still haunts the town occurred over the Christe mas holidays. ” . ® ® 4 MANY OF the wounded are natives of North Africa and, with their white officers, are entitled to visits from local social workers, When Christmas came and ios body appeared with the expected ‘gifts of cigarets, soap and sweets, the officers finally asked for an explanation, ew, £1 Their demands resulted in’ the arrival of a woman with cigarets from which nobody had bothered to remove the Petain stamp. She explained that she had been too busy arranging Yuletide parties for the children of the marshal's guard to come to the = hospital earlier,
