Estimates of Allied Power Prove Nearly Accurate
“* Except Bombings.
WASHINGTON, Jan, 26 (U. P.). —The army wrote finis to a chapter in the war's great guessing game book yesterday by telling the Germans how they made out in their | estimates of allied air.activities during 1944. The Germans did their figuring from intelligence reports and analysis of allied operations, while the | U. 8. apparently learned the nature lot their conclusions from enemy | documents captured in ‘western Europe. | As the story was told by an air |forces spokesman, the Germans didn’t do badly except when it came to figuring how many bombs we were dropping on them.

Their chief triumph,” which of
dr
course they already know about, was in accurately deducing from the nature of allied . air attacks during April and May that final preparations were being completed for the | invasion of France — which came] June 6. Taking the published figure of| 10,000 planes produced monthly by | Britain and the U. 8S, the Germans figured 2000 of these were trainers! with the balance divided into a| ratio of three fighters to five| bombers. 5 Actually, the spokesman said, 1300 plahes- were trainers ‘while the fighter bomber ratio was closer to 50-50,
Losses 1 to 4
The Germans even underestimated allied bomber losses. They figured them at 100 a month, whereas we were losing 400 bombers monthly and losses of all types ran to about 27 per cent of production; At the same time, the German figures for their own losses wére considerably under allied estimates, The Nazi reports - said their monthly losses were 400 planes of all types, or roughly one- quarter of their total production: The German figure for their own monthly plane production was 1600, pretty close to allied guesses. But where the Germans really missed out was in bomb tonnages. They figured about 100,000 tons of allied -bombs would be dropped
and 300,000 tons for the entire year. Actually the U. 8S. air forces alone dropped 404,000 tons during the first half and about 950,000 tons for the year,
