Lots of Silesia Will Spur.
Wave of Defeatism in Reich
By PAUL GHALI Times Foreign Correspondent
BERN, Jan, 25.~The loss of Upper Bilesia to the Russians undoubtedly will produce a wave of defeatism in Germany such as even propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels will be hard put to overcome.
Silesia yields some 40 per cent of Germany's entire coal production. It has important iron ore mines and its output of zinc in 1935 reached 20,000 tons. With it will go the reich’s biggest industrial center after the Ruhr, for many heavy industries have been transferred there since the beginning of the war. Triumph for Slavs Furthermore, politically, the loss of Silesia will mean the victory of Slavism over Germanism. Since occupying the Polish districts of Upper Silesia in 1939, the) Nazis have pursued a ruthless! policy of “de-Polonizing.” ‘The reich commissioner for the propagation of Germanism, Gauleiter Bracht, aimed to replace all Polish artisans and workers with “Ger=mans.
A census of Poles with a view to|
their deportation had already been started when reverses in Russia forced the Nazis to concentrate on increased production and keep Polish miners at work.
Poles Kept on Job
Consequently, Bracht informed the Slavs under his administration that their labor would be needed
until the end of the war when they
would be replaced by German workers repatriated from the Balkaos. Yesterday the newspaper, Nazi Interinf, in a two-page dispatch— one of the lengthiest yet devoted to war events—describes German efforts to hold this vital center. All forces avallable, according to this dispatch, are now being mobilized into the volkssturm (people's army) while 15-year-old youths and important contingents of workers have volunteered to reinforce the ranks of East Prussia's defenders. Meanwhile, adds the Nazi dispatch, furnaces and mines are working full blast just behind the front lines.
Face Coal Crisis
Berlin, despite this, evidensly envisages a decrease in coal production. Drastic new restrictions ow heating and electricity have been enforced. All gas cooking has been forbidden ffi"the Reich capital. Electricity restrictions are being forecast for Switzerland, too. Practically all the coal employed here comes from Germany. Swiss newspapers today suggest that the reason for probable restriction is lack of water in the dams. But last autumn was a particularly rainy season.
