appreciate it. - He's the man who has to read ‘em and his tonsils are raw.
He read Mr. Roosevelt's message on the state of the union in a mellifious voice (and without a preliminary drink of water) and wound up 8000 words.later, he said, spitting cotton. Then came .the President's budget message. Maurer took a swig on ‘that, gripped the reading desk and plowed through all $80,000,000,000 of it, with never a stumble, no matter how big the figures, nor small the type. So it was that I got Maurer off in a corner of the house of representatives for a chat on how to read aloud to congress and I can

a report that cough drops are no help. He has tried 'em,
when you're standing up there in front of 400 congressman with your mouth full of dampness?” Maurer asked. “You're going ‘to’ choke.” That's no good, either. If you must have a cough drop, suck it 10 minutes ahead of time, wash it down with water, and then read. - When Maurer came here in 1939 from Easton, Pa. as afi assistant clerk of the house, he had no. idea he'd ever become the $5000-per-year reader, “One of the regular readers was {11,” he said.” “The other turned up one day with a sore throat, and I was tagged.”
~ Baritone in Choir
The bell-like tones of the Maurer voice have been soothing and in forming congressmen ever since. He's been taking special lessons on voice culture, singing baritone in a choir, and keeping a close eye on
helped him in his profession.’ ’ “A lot of stuff he has to read nobody wants to hear; he roils this off at the rate of 175 words a minute and the result is a kind of monotonous lullaby, pleasant to the ear, When he's got to read something important, like a presidential message, he slows down to 140 words a minute. This gives him a chance to enunciate and to emphasize the important passages. He seldom gets to rehearse, like a
4 [radio announcer. Usually a mes-
senger slaps a document under his nose, he opens it for the first time,
8 |and starts to read. He keeps one
eye on the printed page and the other on the boys out front. If they seem restless, he deletes the.dull parts.
Reads 12 Words Ahead
He does this by reading 12 words ahead of himself (his eye is a dozen words ahead of his tongue at all times) and he can skip thereby any sentence that looks unnecessary to him, Don't be getting the idea that Maurer censors presidential messages, “Every congressman has a copy of each message on his desk,” he said, “and I have learned that they prefer to study these documents at their leisure. All they want from me is the general idea.” : The 36-year-old Maurer, who's beginning to lose hig hair (and you would, too), has to keep himself in good physical shape. If anybody sneezes, he’s inclined to be horrifled. You can understand that. A reading clerk with a cold in the head is like our old friend, the paperhanger with the broken arm, Frantic. .
