pe WASHINGTON, Jan. 4.-—Senator Homer E, Capehart (R. Ind) was, named to the senate privileges: and| elections committee today by the! Republican senate caucus. Should Governor Schricker, his defeated yDemocratic. opponent, de-. cide to contest Capehart’s seat, it is this committee which would hear) the evidence and make recommendations to the senate. Meanwhile, the senator remained unperturbed today. - See Move as Pointless Both he and his seniof colleague, ~Senator-Raymond-E.-Willis;-feel that, Majority Leader Barkley's point that ' Capehart be sworn .in as a member of the senate “without| prejudice” was quite pointless. That view is shared by Charles L. Watkins; senate parlimentarian. Senator Barkley made the move because the report on Indiana from the senate election investigation committee had not yet been received, he said. The seating of Senator Capehart “without prejudice” would reportedly ‘permit ‘his ouster in a contest by a majority, instead of a twothirds vote. Recall Longer Action’ Similar “without prejudice” action was taken in the case of Senator William Langer (R. N. D) | when he was elected in 1940.
