‘Come All

Ye Faithful’

" Christ Episcopal Choir to

Sing at Eucharist.

Christ Episcopal church choir ‘of men and boys, wearing their grace-

ful robes and carrying lighted can-

dles, will sing “O Come, All Ye Faithful” as they march into the church for the midnight choral Eucharist tomorrow. The service will begin at 11 p.m.

It is 43 If the hymn were a call to the Indianapolis faithful to which they are eagerly responding. For, while the choral Eucharist goes forward in the Gothic stone church on the circle, midnight services will be held in churches on many streets radiating from fit. A complete nativity scene—the Child Jesus, Mary, J , the shepherds and the star, wrought in stained glass in the south transcept of Christ church — will add atmosphere to the occasion. The Tiffany window is treasured by the rector and congregation. ‘Dim ‘Cathedral Light’ A “dim cathedral light” will be shed by candles on the altar and throughout the church. Poinsettias and boughs of greenery tied with red ribbon will be used in decoration. The Rev. E. Ainger Powell, rector, will give the sermon, and C Heath, choirmaster and organist, wil. direct the musical program. It will include the anthem, “For Unto Us a Child Is Born” from Handel's “The Messiah”; traditional French carols, “Gloria In Excelsis

The sound of the singing of “Silent Night” in the foyer will precede the entrance of the choir procession .at 11 p.m. in the Bethany Lutheran church. The choir, carrying lighted candles, will proceed down the aisle singing the “Adeste Fideles,” and form a cross at the chancel rail.

Gallery Talk

Miss Anna Hasselman, museum curator, will give ‘a gallery talk illustrated with slides at 4 p. m. tomorrow at the institute, Her subject will be “The Christmas Theme in Art,” the same as that of the current exhibit, Both Miss Hasselman and Mr. Peat have been giving lectures on Christmas ‘art in Indianapolis churches in December, An altar piece in the form of a three-paneled painting, .or triptych, showing the Madonna and: Child with St. Catherine and St. Barbara forms the center of the display. “Madonna and Child with St. John the Baptist and St. Mary Magdalene by Neroccio, also is displayed. This picture was loaned for the exhibit by Dr. and Mrs. G. H. A. Clowes. It was painted in the period in which Columbus’ discovered America and is one of two of special importance by the artist in America.

Woodcut Prints

Original woodcut prints depicting the infancy of Jesus, other Madonnas and a painting of the Andunciation complete the lovely group. However, in the Roberts room just a step down the hall, there are ad-

ditional treasures which reflect Christmas,

Mr. Peat is particularly partial to the treasure belonging to the Clowes. This is not difficult to understand in view of ‘the soft harmonious colors of the painting and the tender, gentle expression of the madonna and saints, The artist, whose full name is Neroccio di Bartolommeo Landi, was born in 1447 in Siena, Italy, of the

Most of reflecting the

tions in European cguntries. However, .there is, in additien to the painting here, an “Annunciation” in the Jarvis collection at Yale.

Rippling Ribbon

The right and left wings of. the triptych are hinged and may be opened. The words of the Angel Gabriel who spoke to Mary are inscribed in a rippling ribbon across the outside of one panel to give an interesting touc hto the picture, The wings of the angel, gossamer and shimmering as those of a humming bird, also are arresting. But perhaps the most engaging pictures in the exhibit to a busy person today, are the woodcut prints. They are done with such definite strokes that they give great confidence in the e. They are the work of Albrecht Durer, who lived in Germany between 1471 and 1528. One of the prints shows the infant being presented at the temple and an old priest with a flowing geard holding the child. The yellowed edges of the paper on which the woodcut engravings are made proclaim their age. They probably were pulled from the engraved wood blocks or cut from hand-printéd books of the period. Shown also in the exhibit are: “Annunciation” ‘by Jacob Cornelisz van Amsterdam, 16th century Dutch artist, and “Madonna and Child” by 11 Sassoferrato (Giovanni Battista Salvi), Italian artist whose period. was 1605 to 1685. His painting was a gift to the museum by Mrs, Albert J. Bever-

Dramas in a variety of settings will depict many phases of - the Christmas story in Indianapolis

churches tonight and tomorrow. The central theme of all the plays is the same, the birth of an infant in Bethlehem nearly 2000 years ago. No suggestion of staleness seems evident in its interpretation, however. Ever fresh, it offers new inspiration as surely as December dawns each year. “Crowded Out.” a play based on the age-old thought, no place for the Child of Bethlehem, will be presented at the Olive Branch Christian church tomorrow at 5 p. m. The choir, directed by -G. C. Hogue, will sing carols betw acts and before and after the play. Miss Marie Lacy will be in charge of the! program. . The Blaine Avenue Methodist Church has chosen “The Message of the Magi,” a Christmas mystery with its setting in a medieval castle on a blustery winter night. The play will be given by # cast of 17 under the direction of Fiank Steinbruegge at 7:30 p. m. The children of the church school will give a two-part program
