Skirmishes With |; Death Described By Local Soldier

“BY ALL RULES I shouldnt

These were the words of Sgt. Robert C. Schalk, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene O, Schalk, 5144 Pleasant Run pky., N. dr, a letter yesterday to Lowell Nussbaum, Times’ columnist, Sgt. Schalk, a. former Times’ employee, is with the 112th infantry regiment and is now somewhere in Luxembourg. “I spent eight days and nights in an observation post so close to the Jerries I could have hit them with snowballs” he wrote. “At night I could even hear the radio in their nearest pillbox (60 yards away) when they left a door open. “But. being in an OP (observation post), I had orders not to fire unless fired upon, This still left me plenty of opportunities to fire, For every night they would sneak out to an OP and raise all sorts of hell, “Frankly and seriously, by all the rules I shouldn't be alive. I don't mean that to sound dramatic, It isn’t, It's just a simple fact, ]

“I'VE HAD our own artillery throw mud in my face. I've gotten a mouth full of cement from an enemy machine gun burst, Ditto from a hand grenade, I've had a sniper’s bullet split the stock of my rifle. And my closest call happened two days before I left the front. _. “Some chap and I were sitting together, talking and eating Krations, at least an hour, in a fairly hidden part of a woods. I left to fill my canteen, returning in less than 10 minutes. When I got back he was lying there dead. A shell had burst a few yards away and blown off the lower half of his face. ® x 8. ] “I CAN laugh about all the rest of it, but that got me. I'm not ashamed to admit that I wept for the first time in 10 years. And that night I was sick as a dog. “Time has helped me to look at the thing more clearly now but at the time I thought I was through. But the old-timers just slapped me on the back and said ‘You're not used to it. That happens every day.’ And it does. That just happened to be the first time for me. I realize now that I will get used to it if I have to. I pray to God I won't have ro.” Before’ entering the army, Sgt. Schalk was a student at Butler university where he served as editor of the Collegian, college newspaper.

TUBERCULOSIS REDUCED WASHINGTON, Dec. 22 (U. P.) — The tuberculosis rate is only. onetenth as high in the army now as it was in the last war, the war department said today.
