_ sneer for the 82d consecutive year | come tomorrow, was telling the Los Angeles newspaper boys about his biggest baseball thrill: The day he started Howard Ehmke § against the Chicago Cubs in the opening game of the 1929 series. Wher Mr. McGillicuddy, otherwise Connie Mack, tells the story i he. skips the most engaging, details; all he tells is how Ehmke did a scouting job on the Cubs; how everybody was surprised he chose Ehmke over the brilliant Lefty Grove, and how Ehmke made good sensationally by fanning 13 Cubs to set a record. Eddie Collins; who generalmanages the Boston Red Sox these days tells the story better Collins was with the Athletics at the time serving as Mr, McGillicuddy’s right hand man. To begin at the beginning, it seems

Ehmke_had worked an early September game against the Yankees who gave him a good going over;

they belted him for homers and scored 13 runs and he was taken out of the.box. » ” ” “BACK IN THE CLUB house. After the game,” recalls Collins, “Connie said to Ehmke: ‘That's the last game you'll start for us until you come and tell me you are ready to pitch. You weren't ready today and you know it, and you cost us a ball game.’ “Days went by and weeks and Connie acted as if he didn't know Ehmke was around. We were . stil] fighting for the pennant and there were two or three, spots where it looked as if Connie could have won with Him. But we kept on winning our share and the day before we cinched the pennant, . at least, I think it. was the day before, Ehmke came up to Connie "and asked if he was ever going to ‘be allowed to pitch another game for us. “Connie answered him In the same words he had used before: *Howard, when you tell me you are ready to-pitch I will use you' - For some reason Ehmke didn't or wouldn't say the words Connie demanded to hear. Well, we finally * wrapped the pennant up and moved on to Chicago to get ready for the first game of the world series. “The night before the game ~ Connie called me to his suite arid we discussed plans for the next afternoon. There wasn't much to ~ discuss beyond the starting pitch"er and that seemed automatic; it had to be our best bet, Grove, At least that's the way I would have figured it. We had a general - meeting in Connie's suite the next morning at 11 o'clock. Everybody was thefe, including Ehmke but

again nothing was said about the starting “pitcher, All the players knew it had to be Grove, anyway.

” » o “THE MEETING didn't last long, and when it ended all the players drifted out, That is, all but Ehmke., Connie and 1 were standing over by a window, our backs turned, discussing last minute details about the game which was then only a cotiple of hours away. I didn't realize Ehmke was. in the room. But evidently Connie did. “At-any- rate, he turned suddenly, looked at Ehmke and asked: ‘Is there anything you want to say to me, Howard?’ Ehmke stood in the middle of the room, his hat in his hand, and for all his size looked strangely like a small boy who had come to make a. confession to his father. “I just wanted to ask if you plan to use me at all in the series?’ A “‘You know what I told you when I took you out of that game with- the Yankees—when you tell ‘me you are ready to pitch I will use you.’ “‘Well, I'm ready to pitch; I'm ready to pitch right now, too.’ “‘All right, Howard. you pitch this afternoon.’

“IF I HADN'T known Connie so long I would have thought he was trying to salve Ehmke into a peaceful frame of mind." But I knew when he told Ehmke he would pitch Ehmke was going to be the pitcher, realize was that Connie had been studying Ehmke closely, even when is appeared as if he didn't know he was around. And he knew when Ehmke finally came to him and said he was ready that he would be as ready as he ever was in his life.” Collins says that almost up to warm-up time only three. menknew Ehmke was going to be the A's pitcher; Connie, Ehmke and himself. “Just before it was time to warm up Connie turned to Ehmke and said: ‘Are you still ready, Howard?’ Ehmke's answer was a hard little smile. He picked up his glove.and started pitching to Cy Perkins. 1 strolled over and watched him for a few minutes, returned to the bench and reported to Connie that he ‘has everything today.’ Connie nodded and grinned. This was not news to him, He had known it from the moment Ehmke had lingered back in his suite earlier in the day.”

Oppose Opening Of Santa Anita

HUNTINGTON PARK, Cal, Dec. 22 (U. P.).—Mounting opposition to the opening of San Anita race track Dec. 30 was emphasized today by the ‘appeal of the city council to Governor Ear! Earlier this week a similar telegram was sent to the California executive by the city council of Pasadena located a few miles from the plant at Arcadia, Cal. Granting of an employment ceiling by the war manpower commission removed one of the last obstacle to reopening the track and touched off the protests.
