NORFOLK, Va., Dec. 22. —The corner was crowded with home-going workers. Two trolleys passed, but the motherly looking woman who had headed the crowd waited for the next car. . “Hello, Grace, you're a little late tonight, aren't. you?” she y asked the operator. “I've been waiting 15 minutes for you.” She “was one of the operator’c regular passengers, and in Norfolk, where it's al- % most worth , oJ your life to get ° es to and from Mrs, Seitz on at rush hours, that's the acme of loyalty. And Grace was one of the T0 women trolley and bus operators recruited by Mrs. George Seitz, wife of a commodore at the navy base. ' . How attractive, energetic Mrs. Seitz became involved in solving the transportation problem of this town, which has trebled its population since the war began, is a story in itself. 4 = = “1 WAS taking a course at WilHam and Mary in personnel management;’t $he explained. “One evening the instructor asked the

class, as a problem, how we'd go about solving the labor shortage in Norfolk.” i . ‘ I blasted away at the lack of transportation facilities here, adding it was a shame that navy boys who had so few passes for town had to stand in line for hours before being able to ride into town, if at all, because cars stood idle in the barn. “A visitor in the back of the room asked me how I'd go about solving the situation. - I told him, I'd ring the door bell of every idle navy wife in Norfolk and ask

her to go to work driving a bus or trolley.” The visitor turned out to be an executive in the Virginia Electric Power Co., and challenged her to take on the job of recruiting. At first-she tried to beg off because as the wife of Commodore Seitz she had many social obligations and two daughters to take

oleasant, feminine atmosphere, which did as much to sell them thé job as Mrs. Seitz’s patriotic appeal to help out. Unlike world war I, when operators threatened to strike if they hired women, the men were more than anxious to train the girls, Mrs. Seitz says. And the girls, most of whom have never driven a car or been the least mechanically inclined, are as good if not better than the men drivers and motormen, and have proportion ately less accidents chalked up against them. - 2 .

DURING THE first week, some

of the girls admitted, they'd come |

back from their eight to ninenour runs on the verge of tears and ready to quit-—not from traffic tangles but from the heckling they were given by male passengers. “Qooh, a lady driver,” the men

ought to take a chance?” But the girls soon learned to trade wise cracks with the best of them, hence their own little coterie of “regulars” who'll wait for several trolleys or buses until thelrs comes along. . » »

THERE IS LITTLE turnover in personnel, a transportation executive exulted. A girl never has quit in a huff. When one does leave it's generally because her husband has been transferred to another base and she's going along. This excellent attendance and long service is due in great part to the personal interest Mrs. Seitz takes in the girls. A happy home and social life makes for a con-
