NAZIS PREPARE I-BOAT THRUST

Believed to Have ‘Upwards Of 400’ for Desperate Final Blow.

Times Foreign Service LONDON, Dec. 21.—While Field Marshal Carl Gérd von Rundstedt is straining to exploit the westfront counter-offensive to the utmost, the allles must be prepared to expect another “desperate” strike from German U-boats, a source close .to the admiralty said today.

The battle of the Atlantic is won|"

and it will stay won, this source said. But with the use of new secret devices and a considerable force of submarines, which they have been husbanding for the grand finale, the Nazis can still be very troublesome to our supply lines. The number actually operational, which the Germans can still count on, is not known but the figure “upwards of 400” has been mentioned as “authoritative.”

If the enemy chose to throw in those, in one big attack, it could not last long but could probably cause a good deal’ of commotion while ‘it lasted. It is reported that the allies’ most recent losses from TU-boats have been “very gentle.”

Little is known about the refine: |

ments which the Germans may have added to their underseas- fleet— which, incidentally, is the only navy branch worth mentioning left to them. But naval men are impressed with reports that some U-boats have something like an “elephant trunk,” which they use for air supply, allowing them to remain submerged while they recharge their engines. The Germans, reportedly, also have improved their anti-detection devices.

Sherman Right, Skunk's No Fun

LANSING, Mich, Dec.21 (U.P). —War is just. what Gen. Sherman said. : That, was agreed on yesterday by unhappy officers of tHe state conservation department. They set about catching and de-odor-" izing another skunk for use as a mascot on an army bomber. It started when an Oklahoma bomber crew picked the skunk as “the most typically American mammal.” The crew asked the Michigan department to send them a trustworthy one. ’ Eager to serve the armed forces, conservation officers did so. Someone stale the skunk and the crew asked and got a replacement. Now Lt. Charles Paul of Battle Creek, Mich, has asked for a housebroken polecat for his bomber mascot at Ardmore, Okla. The conservation department manfully agreed. But it would like to point out that there aren't very many skunks in Michigan and why don't bomber crews try some other state, please?
