COSMETIC COUNTERS are life savers for the last-minute gift shopper. Even in a year of shortages, beauty preparations abound. The cosmetic package this year will be more cherished for its contents and the label that signifies quality. than for its outside wrapping, which has been stripped of much of its splendor by wartime shortages. Hard hit by all kinds of shortages in materials and labor, cos‘metic “firms feel fortunate that they can still offer good staple products, along with a few surprise novelties. ” ” » TO CHARM Christmas” shoppers in quest of surprises are per fumes—many in beautiful bot tles and some set on swank platforms—and that once elusive thing, alcohol-based colognes in popular and exclusive fragrances, always one of the nicer of inexpensive gifts. Put out for Christmas is cologne in a large candlestick spiral bottle, with a flame top, which matches the fragrance and con~ tainer of Helena Rubinstein’s White - Flame perfume, A favorite quartet of perfumes among gift buyers ‘is the Leigh four which come in conservatively priced one-ounce bottles; Dulcinea, flower-laden and ladylike; Poetic dream with a light yet insistent fragrance; Heartbeat, a spicy scent, and Risque for the sophisticated taste. o ” ”

NEW ARE gifts featuring the Victorian motif, which always has charm. One is Dorothy Gray's tiny, be-plumed fuchsia hat carrying a new makeup—lipstick, rouge, face powder and perfume. The Victorian chapeau comes in a striped hat box. Some bath sets are new. There's the Herb Farm sHop’s bath basket—a little square splint affair overflowing with toilet water, hand soap, talcum and bath essence, all wrapped in cellophane and tied with ribbon. Moss rose scents another bath

\

set =~ the Charles of the Ritz package, which combines soap and dusting powder with a bath puff. » ” » LUXURIOUS looking is a set from the House of Gourielli. Bedded down in a blue cotton lined wicker basket is Moonlight Mist toilet water, body and perfume powders. Another set—dusting powder and cologne—does double duty because its base is a handscreened tray of lacquered wood

.which has a future ahead of it

as a tray to hold perfumes and makeup on the dressing table. Camellia scented, it's a Delettrez product. You'll see some new manicure and polish sets in eye-catching containers, One to flag glances is Peggy Sages Colour Guard sentry box housing polish, cuticle remover and polish solvent.
