REMEMBER WHEN
~The Sunday School Christmas tree was lighted with real. cans dles? A close watch was kept to see that the tree did not catch on fire, and everyone held their breath when Santa's whiskers got too near the flame. Remember?

™ Nazi - command had not exploited its tank break-throughs with infanLt. Gen. Courtney H. ‘Hodges troops still held a number of towns {behind the forward panzer columns {of tanks, self-propelled guns, and half-tracks loaded witth supporting infantry, he said.
Knock Out Nazi Panzers
American tank destroyers already had knocked out a number of Nazi parizers, Frankish reported. Hodges’ armor was racing into position to meet the German push. Sope of tne over-run territory included the southern portion of Malmedy province, which was German before Versailles and after 1040. Most of the inhabitants speak German and many welcomed the returning of the Wehrmacht. The Germans were known to be using at least eight captured Amerjean tanks. They took four of them when they seized a bridge in a southern sector of the 1st army front. There were Indications that some German spearheads were swinging toward the Ardennes gap. A break-through there opened the way to France and the channel coast in 1940. The situation:

1st ‘Dents’ German Drive, * High Staff Officer Reports
Germans In four drives penetrating| at least 18 to 20 miles had plunged to
within 13 miles of the ¢éity of Luxembourg. : ‘ They also had over-run St. Vith, Malmedy and’ Stavelot and were within 22 miles of the great base of Liege, A Stockhqlm report of uncertain origin today said the Nazis were only 13 miles from Liege. ‘Groups of American forces were cut off but still fighting hard along the broken front, .At the north end of the break-through, around Monschau, the Germans were being held on new American lines, The Luxembourg radio had been silent since 9 p. m. Tuesday. There were indications the whole southeast corner of Luxembourg had been over-run. First army wer correspondents in highly censored’ dispatches said “everything available” was “being thrown. into battle to prevent a “major break-through.” THIRD ARMY FRONT: Just south of the great Nazi attack area 3d army observers reported feverish activity behind the German ilnes in the Saar. Streams of trucks were seen mov. ing up. . Freight vards appeared to be jammed with troops and equipment unloading. Nazi patrols displayed a sudden aggressiveness, These may be indications the Germans are preparing to spread their offensive to Lt. Gen. George S. Patton's front or are preparing stave off efforts by Patton to
ELECTION CODE
‘Affidavit Voting,” Reduce
Clerks’ Power. (Continued From Page One)
man; Ira Dixon and Edward P. Elsner, explained that their main idea in recommending the changes wag to make it easier for legal voters to cast their ballots, They want to concentrate election power’ in boards instead of in elected officials, they said. Under present laws county clerks virtually boss election machinery, since they serve as election board secretaries by virtue of their office. County clerks now can cast deciding votes on any partisan election dispute, inasmuch as the other two members’ of the board represent their respective political party.
Appointed by Judges
The proposed three-member county election board would be appointed by the circuit judges. One member would represent the public without party affiliation, the other two members would represent the two major political parties, The proposed new state board would be appointed by the governor under the same membership status, one representing the public and the other two political parties. The commission's proposal to per-
relieve pressure on the 1st American army. SEVENTH ARMY FRONT: Ofclal reports said Heinrich Himmler, chief of the gestapo, has assumed personal command of German forces in the Colmar pocket. The estimated 35,000 Nazis in the bridgehead they still hold west of the Rhine displayed sudden aggressiveness, lashing out at the 1st French army, Al] reports—both from front reporters and here at supreme allied headquarters—emphasized the seriousness of the situation.
SEE MAYOR LETTING UNIFORM BILL DIE
The city ordinance transferring $63,300 in funds for payment of police and firemen's uniform allowance has not been signed yet by Mayor Tyndall, - However, the mayor today signed all other ordinances passed by the city council Monday night, It wag understood that he would permit the ‘uniform measure to die on his desk, While the mayor has 10 days in which to sign the ordinance, it is unlikely that it can become effective unless it is signed by Saturday, This is’ because of the provision that the transfer be from 1944 funds. The state tax board still must approve the transfer, About 1000 police and firemen are affected by the action.
GOP SEEKS CLOSER FARM-FACTORY LINK
+ How to convert farm products to Industrial use will be discussed before the Republican legislative policy committee today by Dean Harry Reed of the Purdue University school of agriculture, His talk is intended to assist G. O. P. legislators with thelr. plans to effect a better farm-industry balance in the state, Governor elect Gates has already formulated tentative plans to create a state board of commerce for the purpose
of expediting the farm to factory materials flow,

other purpose than as a stubborn, ground-ylelding defensive of the slow, yard by yard, character. The ultimate geographic objectives of this most threatening penetration are as yet unclear, It has been officially-~though perhaps accidentally—announced that the enemy’s armored elements were attacked by allied aircraft in the town of Stavelot, which is some six miles southwest of Malmedy.
